I think what you mean is that Americans will cut things with the edge of a fork and then forego the ritual of using a knife.
I do this as the whole knife and fork things is a tradition and traditions are usually outdated and need to be ignored.
Why do we use different forks for different things? Why is a fork always on one side and not the other.
Hell, if I'm eating sausages and mash I'm not going to get a knife out to cut something that is soft enough to cut with a blunt object. Also, if I'm eating curry and rice with bread, I'll just scoop it up in the bread.
This is how we used to live before we got so comfortable and decided to make rules for etiquite, so we can entertain the queen and whatnot.
What's funny though, is going to a restaurant and watching some old biddy spend 10 hours getting chicken off the bone with a knife and fork. Hahaha. Just grab it!!

I don't know how true this is but I'm sure that I heard that it goes back to the time of the war of Independence. As far as I remember, British etiquette was to eat with a knife and fork and that by eating with just a fork they were rebelling against the British. Now I'm sure it's just down to different culture.

Generally, yes. Americans also have spoons. They're pretty cool, too.
The eating-with-a-fork thing is really an amazing phenomenon. It pretty much happens all the time until they go to a Chinese or Japanese restaurant and then they try to eat with chop sticks, but rarely are able to actually pull it off.
It's not only Americans, though. In fact... as I understand it, the vast majority of the world eats with forks... or their hands.

Yes.
The US doesn't have the same training in table etiquette that I've found here in the UK. My Welsh husband and his family all eat with knife in the right hand and fork in the left, gentling the food onto the fork before lifting it to their mouths. In the US we only use our knives when it is necessary to cut or separate things. Otherwise we stab, (or scoop up under) the food with our forks to bring it to our mouths. I know described like that in words it sounds rather barbaric, but it isn't really. It's just a different style.
Cheers

A fork is used a lot of times. However I find it even more strange that people in the UK eat Pizza with a fork and a knife! It should be eaten with your hands!! Much more fun!

Not everything, but it is not uncommon in the states to cut up food first, put the knife down and eat with just your fork - this would probably be considered at least odd, if not rude, in the UK.
Different folks - different strokes, and all that.

Not all the time. We have knives for cutting and spoons for stuff that forks are not good to use (like soup) and my personal favorite -- sporks -- it is a spoon and a fork. See sources for a spork. Sometimes we use chopsticks. It all depends on the type of food you are eating.
