My advice is buy some frontline...its the best thing to KILL fleas. What are the symptons? Is he just scratching? or is he biting. Depending on what he's doing it could be allergies and not fleas.
Do NOT buy stuff from the store..you'll waste your money. Flea collars are worthless as well...fleas will just hide under the collar.

Try back brushing the coat so you can get a good look at the skin. Fleas also can be seen on the stomach and the arm pits more easily.
Don't use fogers in the house. They are poison and leave a residu on things in your house. Use Twenty Mule Team Borax. First vacuum, then sprinkle it. The borax in the product kills fleas. It won't kill flea eggs so you'll have to keep doing this for a couple of weeks. Frontline and Advantage from the vets do work. I use Bio Spot. It is over the counter and less expensive. It works just as well.

Give your dog a bath and put a little bit of Dawn dish detergent in the water--it'll kill the fleas and the eggs. Rinse your dog thoroughly to make sure that there's no residue from the Dawn left--it can cause serious skin irritation.
Put a flea collar on your dog (they've got them at Wal-Mart) or invest in some flea drops or something that will kill the fleas and the eggs to keep your dog from being infected. If you live in a wooded area, make sure you get a collar or drops that will also kill ticks, mites, etc.
Good luck!

First you have to get rid of the fleas in your house (if there are any) there sell these foggers that you set off in your house and stay out of your house for 2 hours they work pretty well, and for your dog don't get a flea collar they usually make pets sick. Get a flea shampoo and then buy some advantage stuff to put on the back of his neck and it lasts a month.

Look for flea dirt; tiny black specks in their fur, usually in areas the pet can't reach! Look for fleas themselves; they are often easiest to spot on their lower belly!
If your pet has fleas:
Get Advantage, Frontline or a similar namebrand flea product like this! They are available through your vet or at a pet store! You put the drops at the base of the pets neck...and it works great!
You may have to use a flea bomb or spray on your house, depending on how bad they are!
Note: I recommend using Advantage (or similar product) even if your pet is free of fleas now, it will keep them off if it does come in contact with them! Do it according to what they tell you and as often, it is pricey...but well worth the prevention of the pesty critters!
Good luck!

Give him a bath in flea and tick shampoo (always use flea and tick shampoo, Hartz makes a good one) anad purchase from Frontline for the future to make sure they go away.
Vaccuum your carpets regularly and wash the dogs bed.

If your dog has fleas, you can have him/her 'dipped' to kill the current flea problem. Otherwise, normal shampoos and flea/tick treatments should be enough to deter them from making a home on your pooch.

look for flea dirt or live fleas within his coat - underneath the collar is a good place to spot them.
if you do find them, treat the house with flea powder and go to the vets for a long-term flea treatment

Dawn dish detergent works good to kill fleas. So if you think your dog has fleas, I suggest to give him a bath in it.
