I feel hypnosis is a very valuable and safe experience, a tool which I have used extensively to take out the mental trash, and invite in new ideas.
Hypnosis is basically an altered state of focused consciousness, in which your awareness is heightened and your resistance is significantly lowered, while you are physically very, very relaxed. It's also really hard to lie to yourself when you are under hypnosis, so that works really great for uncovering the crappy lies you privately tell yourself.
Anyone can be hypnotised, but not against their will. You cannot be made to do things that you would not have normally done or found immoral, for instance. In my experience, I always remember what happens. With that in mind, it's important choose to work with someone you feel comfortable with and trust, as this will improve your experience. You can also learn to do it to/for yourself, however, I don't feel it's the same kind of experience.
Although I haven't use hypnosis for some habit as canned as "stop smoking or weight loss", I have been able to use it to reprogramme my mind and release thoughts and feelings that I thought would never go away. Through hypnosis with a very skilled therapist, I've opened myself to new ideas and confidence that has radically changed my life !!

The ability to hypnotise a person is a controversial topic. The strong minded or unwilling are not suseptible to the suggestion of mind probing, the benefit of hypnotisim is to bring forgotten, buried memories to the surface in order to free a person of pain. Unfortunately the biased or interpretation of the person preforming the mind probe is a factor in success, usually it causes more harm than good! If it's past, leave it there, it can't be changed anyway!

I did a great deal of research on this once and here's what I came up with. The closest thing to SCRIPTURAL evidence that anyone can cite against hypnosis is Leviticus 19:26 which, in the King James Version, forbids "enchantment". Those who argue against hypnosis, even for therapeutic purposes, insist that "enchantment" refers to hypnosis. However, I don't think that argument holds water. For one thing, the NIV and NASB both translate this passage "divination" and "sorcery" or "soothsaying" with no mention of "enchantment". For another, the context of the verse is clearly referring to the practice of dark, supernatural arts. Now, I have studied the subject quite a bit and I am totally convinced that there is absolutely, positively NOTHING supernatural about hypnosis. It is a purely natural phenomenon which does not require the intervention of supernatural entities. Now, it could be argued that the scripture calls us to be "self-controlled" and "alert" ( 1 Thessalonians 5:6-8). But I think this is speaking of a life-style. If this could be taken to forbid hypnosis, it could also be taken to forbid sleep and dreaming. One might also quote Ephesians 5:8 "And do not get drunk with wine, [fn]for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit," Now, one could try to draw an analogy between drunkeness and hypnosis, but the two states really don't have much in common. And if you wanted get technical, you could argue that that "with wine" refers specifically to chemically induced states, not natural states like hypnosis. And even if the two states were related, we allow sedation for medical purposes, so it would be inconsistent to forbid therapeutic forms of hypnosis.

10 years ago I went to a hypnotist...to quit smoking...2 hour session one on one...not a group thing. Woke up next morning and reached for my cigs...said aloud "oh, I don't do that anymore.
" and never again had a cig. It is not wrong, scary or weird if it works.
