eat too quickly

If you actually WANT to get hiccups, I'd suggest eating too fast, drinking a pint of fizzy water then going for a quick jog. Fake hiccups can sometime bring on the real thing too. If, however, you want to GET RID of them (which you probably will at some point after you've triggered them!), there are several methods:

Breathe into a paper bag (this reduces the oxygen level in the air getting to the lungs which encourages them to panic and stop spasming, which is essentially what hiccups are)

Drink a glass of water backwards - easier than it sounds - you can just take a mouthful of water, bend your head down (easiest whilst kneeling) until you feel the water on your palate instead of your tongue, and then swallow - you'll feel it slosh past the upper part of your mouth and throat which triggers the same false 'panic, no air' reflex as the paper bag trick.

If those two fail, there is one other trick. The hiccups are caused by a spasm which centres around the diaphragm so another way to stop them is to loosen the natural tension of the diaphragm itself which can be easily done by pressing both hands firmly into your waist just below your ribcage for about 30 seconds, effectively temporarily disabling the muscle causing the hiccups. Very effective, and easier than the other two if you've no paper bag or water!

Happy hiccuping!

For adults, placing an ice cube on the solar plexus area interrupts the hiccup signal. It may take several minutes. If you a night-time cough medicine, you can take that also (to help dumb down your nerves).

If it doesn't go away within a couple of hours, you're in for some real pain. About 20 years ago, I had chronic hiccups for 3 days, and it was debilitatingly painful. I eventually went to a doctor and got doped up.

Did you mean to get or get rid of hiccups?
To get them:Swallow a lot of air with a lot of food eaten too quickly. Also if the last bite is big and almost gets stuck going down it helps.
To get rid of them:
1) hold your breath for a 10 count then still holding it drink 8oz water
2) drink water upside down(bend over and drink from opposite side of glass)
3) swallow a spoon full of sugar, honey, or syrup
4)get scared abruptly
5) let them go away on their own

Why is everyone telling you how to GET RID of the hiccups? Can't they read? Giggle a lot. Giggling causes hiccups. Although why you would want them is a mystery!
