North Korea does not have the power to be more than an annoyance. The Chinese have to walk a fine line between us and Korea and Russia. They need us as a trading partner. but they share a border with both Korea and Russia. I think out best bet is to publicly support Japan while talking quietly with China about getting their boy in line. The worst think we can do is to keep making big talk statements about what we are going to permit or not permit. We have a very big stick now we need to learn how to talk soft.

In short, the dictator of North Korea, after years of making threats of his nuclear capability, has decided to test some long-range missiles near Japan. There is little doubt as to what these missiles could be used for. If he was to strap on one of his nuclear bombs, you would have quite a threatening weapon on your hands, one that would make even our country sweat.

The great difference between the North Korean situation and the Iraq situation is that we have evidential proof that North Korea has nuclear capabilities.

The North Korean dictator has made it clear that if the United States decides to use military force to interfere with his missile testing, he will retaliate, possibly with nuclear force.

If you want the latest on the situation, try picking up The New York Times or reading it online. Today's issue notes the latest bad news for America: China and Russia state that they will NOT back the United States if we decide to start a military op. against North Korea. Both countries state that they are trying to rebuild relations with North Korea and do not wish to lose trade agreements with that country.

A war is not in China's best interest. They are growing their economy and becoming a stronger nation. Why would they piss off the West (not just the US), who is by in large creating that growth for them. Especially since the only reason there would be a war would be because North Korea has a fruit cake for a leader. No, it's in China best interest to diffuse North Korea's rants and craziness.

North Korea is attempting to get money. They will threaten to sell missiles to rouge nations and demand money to make them stop.

They carefully calculate their demands to be just below the point where people lose patience with them.

China does not really like N. Korea but needs them as a 'buffer state.' They really do not want a prosperous democracy (such as S. Korea) on their border. They are afraid that their own people might get ideas about changing the government.

the North Korean People's Army has 20 mechanized divisions, 47 infantry divisions, an armored corps, an artillery corps and the independent 2nd Artillery Corps (strategic missiles)...around 1 million in uniform.

The nation is a honey comb of hardened underground bases and tunnels, mostly located near the 38th parallel.
