I heard that its nearly impossible to breed boston terriers because they have suck large heads and broad shoulders when they are born that they require a c-section. Does anyone have any previous experience with this and is it expensive? Serious answers only because I will report you if its stupid...

the girl who answered "i dont knoeee..." you have been reported.
As far as everyone else, I respect your answers and opinions but, you need to respect my question. I realize that there is a population problem out there, and breeding my dog is not something I will take lightly. I realize that I am not a professional, but I would never put my dog in harms way. If I were to breed my puppy I would work with a vet. Besides, even the professionals had to start out somewhere...

I'm asking the question to hear other peoples' experiences. I read in a boston terrier book aobut breeding that all boston terriers MUST have a c-section. When I had mentioned this fact to various people some disagreed with me. I'm just curious as to whether or not people have actually had to do this or been able to do with out. I realize its some thing that really depends on your dog, but I was just looking for other peoples experiences. Besides, I only have a male puppy that's not even a year old yet. It's not something I plan on doing tomorrow so if you're going to lecture me, spare me please. Thanks!

Yes it is true...most of your "big head" breeds need sections. I actually assisted on one about 2 months ago with an American Bulldog. Unfortunatly 2 of the 3 pups were still born due to the fact that the owner didnt know when the pups were conceived. Its VERY important to know the date and time of conception so that the Vet will know around what time to perform the C-Section.

No, actually they don't always have to have a c-section. Molly , my Boston is due tomorrow and the Vet seems to think she won't need a c-section. She is kind of a larger BT and normally weighs about 21 pounds. A variety of x-ray or sonograms can be done to measure the puppies heads to see if the will fit through the pelvic passage, but sometimes it comes down to an emergency thing. So, honestly, there is really no way of knowing. Someone told me to ask the breeder who sold Molly to me if she was from a line of free whelpers. If so she has much better chances of minimal complications. But, if you only have the male right now, and he is still young, maybe that would be something to research and look for in the female.

If you are working with a vet, then they should be able to help you with any questions that you may have in regards to breeding your Boston Terrier.
While you may believe you are doing nothing to hurt your Boston, I suggest you look on petfinder.com and see just how many Bostons are up for adoption.
Also Bostons Terriers are known dogs used by alot of puppy millers, so unless you can trace your bloodline back 5 generations, and have done genetic testing, its not advisable for you to breed this dog. You do not know what will happen unless you fully know the history of this dog, and its family.
We can respect the question as a question, but the fact that you have had to ask it, means that you have not done enough research and the responses are justified.

A know someone who breeds Bostons, and I think he just assumes it will be a c-section. There is nothing wrong with breeding, but done well it can be a very expensive hobby, not to mention heartbreaking at times. If all you want is a puppy, buy one from a good breeder. If you really want to breed, get to know serious boston people, and start learning!
Great post truegem! I wish everyone on here would read it!

You should not be asking these questions here, you are going to get nothing but grief. You should be directing these questions to your breed mentor, the person or people you bought your registered pups from. They will be able to go over pedigrees with you, decide whether the two dogs you have SHOULD make puppies. The 2 pups should be in confirmation classes now, participating in AKC dog shows, and you should be making contacts in the breed. These people you meet can also help answer any questions you have. A website is not going to be a great help when you have immediate questions. You need to have real people who you can call at 3 in the morning when you need to make the tough call to bring your dog to the emergency vet because she has been in labor for 2 hours and not produced anything. Good luck. Don't turn to Yahoo for these kind of decisions. It is too important, and not something to do on a whim.

I have a 5 year old Boston Terrier, who YES we have breed. She had 5 puppies!!! Which is alot for the breed, but she did it all naturally! She didn't need a C-section, we had the vet onhand but we did nothing but watch and help a LITTLE, by little I mean took a towel and cleaned them off a little. Not all HAVE to have a c-section.

I am not a professional dog trainer nor am I a vet, but I own two full blood akc registered boston terriers and they were not born by c-section. their mother had them like any other dog has puppies. In fact when she had that litter she had 4 puppies. I know quite a few people who have bostons and none of them have had c-sections.

Yes, C-sections are the norm for Bostons, the price will vary depending on your area.
If you are serious about breeding, I suggest you contact the Boston Terrier Club of America for information about things you need to consider.
http://bostonterrierclubofamerica.org/faq.html
Also try to meet local breeders and join your local kennel club and/or Boston Terrier club. They are great sources of information, and dedicated to the breed.

I have actually never heard that with boston terriers..it sounds to me like you have confused them with english bulldogs who DO need to be artificially inseminated and need c-sections.The reason they are one of the most expensive dogs you can buy.I am guessing if that were true with bostons they would cost a lot more money than they do.

That is a *stupid* question. LOTZ of breeds tend to need C-sections! Big heads, small pelvis=C-sec.,though there plenty of other reasons why it may be needed.
YES,it can be HUGELY expensive! Hundreds, even thousands of dollars & risky for dam & pups.
Leave it to the PROFESSIONALS!!
