The American Kennel Club officially recognizes 140 different breeds of dogs and has a list of 32 more rare breeds that it will probably recognize eventually. You can find out their names and all sorts of information by visiting AKC.org.

The British counterpart to the AKC recognizes a few more breeds, but there are at least 400 types of dogs that are known to be distinct breeds that are not officially recognized by either organization. There is an interesting article on the rarer breeds at http://www.netpets.com/dogs/newsroom/akcfss1.html.

The fact that a breed is not recognized by a national kennel club does not mean that it is a new breed - some of the unrecognized breeds have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years. If a breed is not officially recognized it usually only means that the breeders and owners of that particular breed have never become organized enough or vocal enough to convince the kennel clubs that they are serious about maintaining a consistent standard of conformation (appearance and behavior traits) for that particular breed.

a species. They are the dogs. If you want a list of all the breeds, I doubt there is anyone in the world who would want to sit and list the thousands of different breeds just for 10 points. sorry.
