It's been that way for ages. I think it mostly has to do with adolescence and it's social structure. Adolescence is pretty much the only time in your life when you're struggling to be accepted, and when it matters the most. Most of this goes away halfway through college, hopefully. But does get better in college. Because that's when you finally have a chance to discover yourself, take classes you want, etc. Just don't let those things distract you from what's important, like grades. If you plan on going to college and apply for scholarships this is one thing you can't go back and redo. Believe me I know, and I'm sorry for it. What's important is to find some good friends and have fun with them, hindsight is 20/20.

As long as there is sports in high school there will be jocks, as long as education is taught there will be nerds, as long as students have similar intrests they will group together around those intrests. Art, Religion, Cars, Acadimics, Choir, Band, etc. Somewhere along the way one group often decides that it is better than the others and becomes exclusive thus forming a clique. Usually the first group to do this becomes the group of "popular" people, and these people often then decide, or place outsiders into groups by labeling them. The truth about Cliques is that there is usually a structure with in them, and the higher up that structure you are the more desprate you become to be even higher. I belive the most stressed out, worried, frightened, bitter, truely unhappy youth are the ones who are the leaders of the popular groups. These people live in constant fear of loosing their control, and are restricted to remain trapped living within the constraints of what everyone else expects of them. It is very sad.

Because, when people act a certain way they just get catagorized. I think like 90 percent of the school should be in 1 catagory, and the other actual individuals who can think for themselves in the other. I swear to god, it sickens me when i see EVERY girl in a 2,000 person high school with the same exact purse , skirt, and legging things on in the same day. All with fake tans, all with dyed hair, all singing the same song. It's funny how easily the media or others can catch the obsession of the entire school. Im a junior now, and i never understood why people went along with it. It's so damn pathetic, how narrow minded everyone is in high school. I seriously can't wait to graduate next year so i can go on and enjoy the rest of my life :P

There is groups like that everywhere (not just highschool) but I think in Highschool there is a lot of ajusting going on and a stronger need to fit iinto a group (and thus the nerds, the jocks, the preps, the goths etc all emerge).

I really wish I knew. It probably starts out in kindergarden where the first thing the kids say gives them a reputation later on.
