The quote " ain't over 'til the fat lady sings," was used by Yogi Berra during a world series when one of the teams pulled a win from a lagging score in the ninth inning.

The origin is from opera, where usually the diva has to have an aria before you know that you're close to the finish of the show.

The saying caught on and was later altered and also expressed as, "It ain't over 'til it's over." Both sayings mean that you never can tell the outcome of something until it is truly finished.

It comes from opera, when the final scene illustrates the female (usually a big ol' lady with a great voice) sings her dismay about how her lover died. When the fat lady sings, the $h!t is done.
