I am confused about the PAL/NTSC formats. Here in USA we use NTSC and in India they do PAL. I am planning to gift a video camera to some one in India and I want to buy it here, in USA. What are my options? If I bought a DVD camcorder, will the DVDs work from dvd players in India? Can I connect camcorder with AV (Red, Yellow, white ) cables to the TV directly? Is miniDV better option than DVD camcorder in this situation?
I appreciate all answers.
Thanks.

You are better off buying a PAL camcorder in the US and shipping it to India. I don't know of many inexpensive camcorders that will record in both PAL and NTSC format.

DVD camcorders are problematic because of two region coding on DVD players. In the US, many times the region coding can be easily circumvented, or is not even an issue with home movies. However, I would be wary of the format, especially since the person who owns the camera, now has to buy blank DVD's, which can be expensive.

A PAL miniDVD or Hi8 camcorder is available in the US, but you are better off buying it on-line. I have great result purchasing from the folks at B&H Photo video. Their prices are great, they are fast and they are located in the US.

Here's a couple of options for you.

Get one that does both PAL/NTSC..mini DV is a good format. HDD Cam is better if you do your own editing. then burn your own DVD with DVD authoring software. Hope that helps.
