The day I met my wife. I wasn't a child, but everything before that was never happiness until I met her and realized what true happiness was.

There are several. The one that always sticks out is Fourth of July. We always had a huge cook out with a huge group of friends. And after dark, instead of going somewhere to watch the fireworks, we would have our own show. There was always alcohol (in moderation), good food, and lots of fun. They were some of the best times of my life. But then we'd also get a Chalet at a place called Woodland Alters and we'd spend a weekend or a week or two up there in the middle of a woods with all the bugs and we'd walk down to the pool and we'd just have a blast sitting around, listening to guitar music, talking, and enjoying God's creation.

I have so many! I really loved the times all my family would come down to visit (and there are a lot of us!) and all of us cousins (about thirty of us) would lay out blankets on the grass outside and all pile on there together and spend hours talking before falling asleep. And my first memory is one of my favorites too: My oldest brother and sister had chicken pox, and I didn't, so my mom talked my dad into taking me away from the house, and my grandfather tagged along since he was bored (he's a widower). We drove out to this little fishing cabin on this pond, me riding between my two favorite men in my Papa's old Ford, and I remember them singing along to "walk the line" by Johnny Cash. We spent a week out there, just the three of us, and it was heaven for me!

I had been terrified of my grandpa for as long as I can remember. He was constantly drinking and was not pleasant. He never did anything to hurt me I was just scared of him. When I was nine I recall my grandma coming over to say good bye. She was leaving grandpa and moving 6 states away. Shortly after that we went to visit grandpa in the hospital. He'd checked himself in because he wanted to stop drinking. He smiled at us. I was so confused. I felt sorry for him but, I didn't like him at all. A few months went by and grandpa (sober grandpa) came over often. I always stayed my distance. My mom sat me down and explained that grandpa wasn't like he use to be. She said he was never himself while he was drinking alcohol. And I could see that he was more friendly and actually loving. But, I continued to stay my distance. That is until my 10th birthday. I was sitting in our green swivel rocking chair in the living room and my grandpa walked up to me. He kissed my forehead and told me happy birthday. I was frozen. Then he smiled at me and told me I got my brown eyes from him. That may sound silly to others but it is my fondest memory. My grandpa actually loved me ... and he was nice. Ever since that day I would help grandpa with his grocery shopping and I visited him often since he lived down the street. I love him with all my heart! We live several towns apart now but I always make sure I'm there to give him cookies for Christmas and he always has a recent picture of my children and me on his end table next to his chair.

Going fishing with my father, it wasn't the fish we caught but hearing him tell me stories of his childhood or teaching me how to tie a leader. Who I am as a man is deeply shaped by the time we spent together, thanks dad!
