A count is a nobleman in most European countries, equivalent in rank to a British earl, whose wife is also still a "countess" (for lack of an Anglo-Saxon term). The word count comes from French comte, itself from Latin comes— in its accusative comitem— meaning "companion", and later "companion of the emperor, delegate of the emperor". The German title Graf and its cognates may be based via their Latin form grafio on the Greek verb graphein to write.

COUNT is part of the European aristocracy whereas EARL is part of the British aristocracy. They are of equal rank.

The word COUNT derives from the old Roman Empire.
EARL ranks between MARQUIS and VISCOUNT

The female equivalent is COUNTESS in both cases.

It is order of precedence. There is no Count in the UK but you do get Viscounts. Earls have a higher order of precedence i.e are more senior in rank
