ive only hennaed my hair to color it. over 20 years now.
it covers grey beautifully.

do not use henna over regular chemical dye or vice versa. you'll fry your hair.
but henna works great if you get into a swing of it and dont use chemical dyes. Its much better for your body too. chemical dyes are pretty nasty for your health.

henna is semi-permanent. itll rinse out slightly when you wash it to some extent. once you do it for a while tho the color builds up and looks great!

henna and vegetable dye are the absolute worst! i am a hair stylist and anyone i've known who has done it has ruined their hair. These dyes have a lot of metallics in them that coat your hair shaft and sometimes penetrate into your folicle, sometimes never to come out, ever.
and if you are looking to use semi, demi, or permanent colour in the future, there is no guarantee it'll come out as planned if you use hennas prior.
stick with a wash-out colour for your first time, and if you like it, do a semi-permanent after it washes out so it'll stay for awhile if you are timid about permanent.
i've seen someone try to go blonde who had old henna in her hair, it went bright green. dont mess around with home hair colours, see a professional, your hair will thank you.

No, those are in general just temporary. If thats all you want, then yes it will work fine. But if you want a long term permanent change, then you'll want to use something else
