Most states have DMV websites with this information.

For California, it's http://www.dmv.org/ca-california/vehicle-registration.php

There's a seperate link there to download the forms.

I found this from doing a yahoo search for "California DMV".

If u bought the car from an individual u will need to transfer title into ur name to register the car. Be sure the person u bought it from signed the back of title also.

**U would need title (original) & bill of sale.**
** Car will need to be inspected**

Or... If u bought from dealer ship u will have title app. & bill of sale.

In Alabama on each used car we have to look up on our county screen and the state ALVIS for the last tag/registration. If no last registration is found then we ask for a dealers affadavit. It is a notarized document from the dealership stating which state it came from.

** Without the dealers affadavit the person will be charged 12 months back taxes they don't really owe. Its how the system is set for some reason**

It really depends on the state some are really different. Also on used vehicles advorlem taxes are collected when u register. U also pay for the tag.

Not sure what else to tell ya but, I don't know what state u live in so not sure if this website will help. Hope u find all the info. u need.

When you buy a car you will get a title signed by the seller. You must take that to the DMV and they will charge you taxes on the amount that you paid for the car. That is all you have to do to transfer the title into your name but if you are wanting to get the car legal to drive then you must call your insurance agent and tell them that you just bought the car and you want it to be covered on your insurance. You will then need to either stop by the insurance company or have them to fax you a copy of your insuance certificate and you must take that to the DMV with you along with the title to get the car legal and you will then have an additional $30 charge to buy license for the car unless you are transferring them from another car. Then you are set to go.

I cant give you websites because you may not be where I am, but it is advisable to check out if the car is still under finance and to check if it is a stolen vehicle. This will avoid you having the car taken from you after you have paid good money for it. Here in Australia, we can call our local registration branch and have a search done on the car to check before you buy. Good luck.
