I just came back from Belgium and here's my experience:
We exchanged some US $$ for Euros at the bank here and them used the ATM machines over there to get cash.
We got a much better exchange rate pulling cash out over there than we got in the bank in the US.
We used the credit cards for bigger purchases there, the best rates are always from American Express.
So have a few Euros with you before you travel - 100 should cover you just fine, especially, that public transportation is cheap and very efficient and then withdraw cash as needed over there from the ATMs.

Use Credit Cards for big things because you will get the bank rate. The bank rate is usually better then going to exchange places at the airport and in tourist areas. try and get some cash converted to euro at your bank before you go for things that you may want to purchase right away and maybe for you ride from the airport. If you feel comfortable carrying cash the go ahead and change as much as you want at home. If you need to change more when you get there, try and find a bank that will do it. This is always cheeper the Thomas Cook or something.
Oh and when you use your bank card at the ATM you will also get the bank rate. That is what I usually do is jsut take out cash like I would at home.

I would exchange the bulk of the money into Euro travelers checks (if your taking a good amount) then you can go to any bank if Belgium and there will be no service charge.Just take 2 days worth of Euro notes to use until you can get to the bank.

Hey,,, you can get money exchanged either before or after you are there..... what ever is easier for you ..... less stress.....
I suggest getting a bank card to use at any ATM machine... instead of changeing money thru a bank..... it makes life easier.... and you dont have to depend on a bank being open or not....
Have fun...

if you use a credit card, you're gonna have a lot of extra fees.
change your $ in a bank and not a change bureau ( where it's for tourist and more expensive!)
for sure $ aren't accepted in the country. only €. travel safe

i 've been through the entire euopean union and using your atm/credit card will invariably give you the best rates provided you do not retrieve cash eeveryday since fees are often assessed.

Go to your nearest bank. but i suggest maybe ringing ahead to book in the amount you want to bring. in case they don't have it in stock. Also go to http://www.xe.com/ucc/ it's a great site to check how much you would get in a different currency.
Good luck with your travels mate.

I dunno about credit cards, I lean towards cash because everyone accepts that. Change your money whenever you see the rate is either high or low, whichever you're looking for.
