The idle process is a good thing. It is the other processes that you want LOW.

For Windows XP, use RUN and type in MSCONFIG. Uncheck all processes in the STARTUP section, except your anti-virus software. Reboot and check your anti-virus status.

Then get and run SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware from www.download.com The free version is fine. Install, update and run these scans to clean up your computer.

The System Idle Process just means that the processor isn't really doing much of anything right now. It's normal for it to be in the 90s when you're not doing anything with your computer.

I had this problem as well and the worst program was my McAfee anti virus software. I found out later that I did have a virus that McAfee wasn't detecting. Go to start and run msconfig. Deselect everything in your Service and Startup tabs - restart your PC - this stops viruses from loading. If your anti virus software isn't doing the job, download Norton from Limewire.com, follow the instructions in the .txt file to get it working properly - do not connect to the web while it its being installed.

After you've got it up and running do a full scan, restart your PC and then connect to the web to get it registered. After this, run msconfig again and select everything in the Service and Startup tabs. If there are any viruses left, Norton will find them.

If your computer is idle... Your system idle process will be high... Hence the name. It's basically CPU that is not being used.

Any unused CPU power gets labeled as "idle". All that means is that it's available for usage. It isn't actually being used.
