The giving of a personal name is a very important aspect of Hawaiian culture. People select or are given Hawaiian names through a variety of ways. One way is to be named after someone, possibly a relative, friend, or an admired person from Hawaiian history. Another method is to be given a name which suits the person’s personality. Sometimes a person will have a dream about a name to give to a child or loved one. In ancient Hawai‘i, it was common to name a child after an event that happened at or near the birth. A given name might also be changed later in life. Aside from using traditional Hawaiian names, sometimes people create their own by putting together a few words into a phrase. Also, in ancient Hawai‘i, names were not necessarily male or female. Names with male/female inuendos were introduced by Westerners.

As far as the name Kiana is concerned, the closest traditional Hawaiian name is "Keanu" (cool breeze from the mountain).

Kiana is definetely not Irish as there isn't even a K in the Irish language. Cian is an Irish boy's name that's Kian in English so maybe some baby sites decided Kiana was the feminine version. It must be an Irish name translated into English if it is one. It's also Persian and Iranian. I'd give it 5/10 BQ: I prefer Kaia.

Try this Web site (http://www.alohafriendsluau.com/names_i-p.html). However, it looks to be a literal translation.
