I am all for having people learn as many languages as possible, but having one uniform language is one of the things that pulls a nation together as it is a shared experience. Can you imagine not being able to talk to your neighbor because you can't speak their language, not being able to tell you neighbor that they have a nice yard, or to ask them to turn down their radio, or ask them if they know of a good mechanic in town? It is small interactions like these that can bring people together. I know some people have this problem now when they move to this country, and people in this situation should be nurtured, respected, and taught as much as the English language as possible. Important forms that they have to fill out and sign such as immigration papers, leases, mortgages, etc., should, as a measure of respect, be in the language that the person understands. Anyone moving to a different country needs to learn as much of the language of that country though. Just because we have one main language, does not mean everyone should not learn a second language (or more). Learning a different language helps you to see something from a different perspective, and that is very important.

No doubt that English should be the primary language. I mean, I know that U.S. is multicultural but at least know some english. Learn it dammit!! I live in miami and got cussed by a hispanic woman because I wasnt talking to her in spanish "This is america, speak spanish." is what she said. Unbelievable. I am part hispanic but I use english as a primary language. People only hurt themselves if they dont learn the language.....it onlt takes just enough to get by. thats all.

Last time I checked, Native Americans didn't speak English when they were being slaughtered. Save that whole "this is America and English is what has always been spoken here" crap for someone who doesn't see the hypocrisy in it all. With that being said, I think everyone in this country should speak English because they need to know it to further themselves. Not because "this is America and that's the way it is".

The founding fathers spoke English. The Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence were all written in English. Therefore, the main language should be English.

I hate those who impose.

Everyone doesn't think U.S. language shouldn't be English. Almost of the major businesses and government's are conducted in English. All of your public school's are in English, try to find any public facility that isn't in English. English is your primary language in the USA.

Because the people that lived here first speak English. We will always speak English. People that move here from another country should learn how to speak it and speak it well, before they move here. I'm tired of hearing Spanish auto prompts and Spanish written on everything.

I don't see why we can't teach our children to be bilingual. In many other countries, children learn the local dialect, and then English. So, there is no reason our children couldn't study Spanish in schools. Children are much more receptive to learning languages than adults, and the more you know growing up, the easier it is to learn a third or fourth language later on in life.

No question that the primary language in the US is English. And it should stay that way.
