then binge sleeping at weekends..?

would it make you mentally ill?
i know someone whose behaviour seems very odd and who is unusually incapable of coping with any sort of stress or conflict but regularly goes without sleep (seems to be addicted to staying up all night) do you think this could be why..? what would this do to your brain..

No, it wouldn't make you mentally ill. But it could impare your judgment and make you act funky. I know because I've been a chronic insomniac for as long as I can remember. When I was in grade school, I would wait and do my homework at 4AM because I couldn't sleep, it was quiet and no one would bother me. I went for a sleep study and got completely wrong results. I've been taking melatonin and extra calcium for almost a year to see if it would help me sleep better. Sometimes it works. Most of the time it doesn't. I think some people just can't sleep for whatever reason.

I was experiencing this and kept going to doctor to be told that it was stress - change my lifestyle - etc. I went on with this for 3 years with the same doctor - along with other symptoms. I thought I would try one more time, but this time I insisted on seeing a different doctor. He reviewed my file, asked a few questions - and didn't make me feel like it was all in my head; then he suggested a sleep test. WOW. I found out that what I had been experiencing was sleep apnea. Went to web site to read up on it - and there listed was all the symptoms I had been telling the other doctor for 3 years. Boy was I relieved, and now I have a machine that I sleep with every nite and it sure is nice to get a good nite sleep. Has made the biggest difference in my personality - mood swings - have more energy, etc.

Yes. It's called sleep debt and you can never get it back. There are some excellent articles available on it. Those in the field say it's best to get up at the same time each day, because even though you are sleeping more on the weekends, you aren't taking away from your sleep debt. You are messing up your circadian rhythms with this schedule.

Yes, it will effect one's mental health, and physical health as well. Studies have shown that if one does not allow the body adequate rest and sleep, one's lifespan is greatly diminished.

As for the odd behavior, there may be other reasons for that, but sleep deprivation can certainly add to it.
