I have a male westie that I bought from a reputable breeder. He is about 6 months old and last time I had him into the vet they said that his testicles had not descended and he would have to have an opperation to have them removed, much like a female getting spayed. Is there anything that I can do about this or is the opperation the only option. What about the breeder, should I inform them about this or is it common, and if so why does this happen?

I would inform your breeder as undescended testicles is a hereditary problem and as a reputable breeder she would need to know this information.

From what my vet told me, the only way to fix this problem is to have the dog neutered. If you choose not to neuter your dog, you run a much high risk of him developing testicular cancer than other dogs whose testicles have dropped. if they are both up in his abdomen, then you cannot use him for breeding purposes (the ethical reasons are many) because his body heat will have rendered him sterile.

In humans the reason this happens is the gubernacular muscle does not develop properly and therefore is not long enough to allow the testicle drop into its proper place.

Have your vet do the surgery. It is better for the health ofyour dog.
Undescened testicles can become cancerous and need to be removed. It is a safe surgery as it is done fairly often.Yes I would inform the breeder of this dog as sometimes this is a hereditary condition.

If your not happy with the dog..most breeder will take them back in hopes you can get another one. Some breeder want to have the dog sold even if they know what is going on..
here is some site i have found so you can either join and ask a vet..
http://www.vetinfo.com/dmale.html
here is a site for your breed of dog as well
http://www.westierescue.com/article.asp?ArticleID=26
http://www.nzymes.com/Articles/hereditary_congenital_diseases_in_dogs.htm#Section1
http://www.sidyboysfoolin.com/CairnTerrier.html

I hope some of these site can help..check them out before you do anything and if nothing helps then get in touch with the breeder and tell them what is going on..

I would certainly contact the breeder >You may have some financial recourse if the pups health was guaranteed. It is a heredical problem.I know this is not what is concerning you but surgery is the answer to your queation IF your dog is a candidate for it.Good Luck to you.
