i thought 16 was too young. and even then a 16 should only be allowed to become an adult if there's abuse in the home. but just for sex?!!! Isn't it bad enought that little girls are having babies? So instead of solving the problem they make it worse? it's gonna be a blow-over because alot of those girls will end up on welfare and then the state will realize it's mistake when all their money is going to a bunch of teen parents. alot of 14 y/o are still in 8th grade. how can a state legalize something that will destroy a child's education? if there are any good parents in S.C., you will move out of the state, i know how 14 y/o girls are and they will SOOOOO abuse that law and use it to their advantage. this is outrageous. Can Bush override this law? we should start a petition.

I understand your anger but you need to look at the FACT that 60% of 14 year olds are already having sex, and for a 15 and 14 year old to be having sex then prosecuted as sex offenders (which happens all the time) is ludicrous! it runes these children's lives, I am not saying that the chance of pregnancy or sti's doesn't I'm just saying that lowering the age of consent so these kids cant be prosecuted for what they are already doing is a good thing.

I also want to point out that the age of consent does not allow an adult to have sex with a minor, it only allows a minor to have sex with a minor. (its still illegal for a 19 year old to have sex with a 14 year old regardless of the age of consent)

THIS IS WRONG. I am nearly 17 and live in England where the consent age is 16. the amount of pressure that it put on us as soon as we turn 16 is immense. England has the most young mums in Europe. not only is a life changing effect on the young mum but also on society as more welfare benefits are then handed out.
also what stops perverts who want pre-pubed teenagers. now the law would be allowing them to have sex with them. like you said, where is the protection?

Is this consent to sex between a man and a woman. I suppose it will make a lot of paedophiles activity legal. Just keep an eye out and see if they say that they have got rid of a load of sex offenders. You crazy americans

Kids want to grow up sooner. They think they know what they are doing and in the process they are costing the courts millions a year in lawsuits that don't necessarily belong in court because they "consented". I'm not defending it, but from a governmental point of view, it makes sense.

Buh, humbug. It's been 14 here in my country since, I don't know, 1811 or thereabouts. And it's a fact of life that children mature much quicker these days. You might not like it, I might not, but it's no crime for a 15 year old girl to have sex with her bf.

Consent for what? To get married? Good lord, I cant' even imagine being married at 14. Someone needs to protest that.

Oh that just turns my stomach! A child the age of 14 is not mentally capable of grasping the concept of sex and its real consequences.
