I've had husky's, malamutes and hybrids of both. They are awesome pets!!! So beautiful! The biggest issue with them all is that the majority of the time, they see cats and other smaller animals as prey and you have a fight on your hands with that. So I don't suggest owning a cat and a husky. Another con is these breeds tend to be more "alpha" than other breeds. It can be difficult to own more than one of the same gender (and sometimes one can be too alpha aggressive to even have a different gender mate).
They needs lots of brushing too! They have several layers of hair. Their bottom coat is a thick coat (almost cottony). It is used to keep them warm (as they are snow dogs). When the weather warms up, this bottom coat will start to come out almost in clumps. So keep your husky brushed to keep him cooler in the heat. DO NOT shave him though. The second layer of fur will help keep him cool. The bottom coat comes out to allow the second coat a chance to bring cool air to his skin. Shaving him could actually kill him.
You also need to make sure you keep him rinsed GOOD if you swim in any body of water (lake, river, ocean, etc). The salts and small bugs and whatnot will love the thick coat of your pooch and thus runs the risk of hot spots and infections. It can take a good half an hour just to thouroughly soak the dogs coat. Plan an hour at least to bathe and rinse him well.
They are very good dogs though. I love mine to death, she's a big spoiled puppy. She's very loyal to me, very protective of the kids too. Last night, she and I were playing when my baby came out of the other room. She tried to jump over the baby but ended up just barely "clipping" her and it knocked the baby over. The baby came to me, crying (she wasn't hurt--just got spooked). Anyway. The baby cried in my lap and the dog kept licking her almost in an appologetic way. They are very good dogs and I'd own another if I could!!!
But that's the other thing to look out for. Sometimes they don't know their own size and even in a playful mood, can hurt small children.

I have a 4 year old male that looks like the dog in the movie "The Lost Boys" (actually his name is also Nanuk) and a 3 1/2 yr. old female. They just had their first litter. I love these dogs. They are not good watch dogs in my opinion. They will bark at people or other animals in your yard but mine are more likely to lick them to death than attack. They shed severely in the hot weather, so they are not very good indoors if you are concerned about dog hair. I love my huskies and would never want to own any other type of dog.

No, but my next door neighbor does. This dog has issues about men, and yesterday a man dropped in to visit me. We're on the sofa snuggling, and her damn dog is in their open window barking and barking at us!!! She would not stop until he left! I guess you can tell how often I have male visitors, if I only just discovered this about that dog now. But that's a whole 'nuther issue...
Anyhow, back to the Siberian husky. If that damn dog is gonna pull that sh!t everytime I have a guy in the house, we are gonna have to go to war. Grrrrr........
And THAT'S what I think of Siberian huskies. Have I made myself clear?

My Aunt did for 20 years, then she passed away. It was a great dog and she was also good with kids. They are very protective too. Something we could not laugh loud around her because she thought someone was getting hurt.
