i know the answers to them as well thank you very much but you can go ask 200 people who the 4th president was and theyd tell you the name of the 16th and about 5 would actually know the right answer and my grammer isnt important this is the internet this isnt school the point is the average american complains about having to learn a foreign language but foreigners come and when they learn english that gives them one step advantage over us because now they can speak our language and theres and they can also start a bussiness in our country faster than we can . and if you want to defind the fact that america doesnt teach us enough than find i love this country and i just dont want to see americans being the minority in america in 100 years but i guess thats what you want if you cant see where im coming from i dont really care im already a minority but the race ameria will be too

sweetie, first of all do you have air or water on you brain that makes you such an airhead; could give you the long answer but i'm not. The reason "why we need to know more than the avarage American" is very simple, I stayed in school like many other kids with my background and many other backgrounds, 3/4 of what is in the questionare that you read are taught throughout school from first grade all the way 'til high school and if you ever had to take a constitution test like I did my sophmore year of high school you woul've known that all of the questions there are also in the citizenship exam. Now school is free in this country all the way up to your last year of high school educate your self first that way you won't feel so handicapped. We also have to work twice as hard if not more at knowing all this, why? well first we have to learn this language, that by the way we are not forced to learn it happens to be an option and is not that hard anyways; second you guys haven't hadicapped yourselves at all, just for your fyi a little over half of Europe happens to have English as their second language, why? because the USA happens to be the biggest potency of the world that the Europeans think that knowing English is a need just like we see it. Now we as americans, yes i took the citizenship test and is only ten questions long, haven't hadicapped ourselves, people that thinks that needs to educate themselves first and then debate their thoughts without making them sound like insults.

Actually most schools have Civics exams that must be passed to graduate (or at least they did). Immigrants should show some effort in wanting to become a citizen, also these tests help new people understand and appreciate their new rights, and some of the processes so they can fully participate as a citizen.

And no!we should not learn their languages, they need to learn English. There is already too much accommodation and remediation in our society. If you want to be here, then assimilate. Don't expect the world to bend to you.

Because we want people to be serious about wanting to immigrate here. Think of how much longer the wait list would be if we just let anybody in(which would be dangerous too). I think the fact that Americans don't know these things speaks more of the education system(which is horrible and declining fast). What we need to do is improve civic education for our kids, not whine about immigration.
BTW- If your looking, the fourth president was James Madison, in no way to be confused with the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.

1. I know them.

I've looked at those tests too.

2. We all learned them even if we forgot them, and they need to learn them, and probably forget a bunch of them, too.

Misery loves company. You can't call yourself American until you know how many were the original colonies.

Seriously, they are becoming a citizen of this country and we think they should want to know something about us. I really don't think that is too much to ask. It is more of a character test than a test of facts: if you are offended to even learn about our history, you probably won't want to really be a part of our society.

Why is it only a problem with immigrants today? And typically NOT with European immigrants? Many of the problems of assimilation we have today existed with earlier immigration waves as well, but not that one.

This ensures that immigrants assimilate into our society. Who says we don't know them? You may not, so please don't speak for everyone. Can you move to France and not speak french? The least you can do is learn the language, it will help you in the long run. What's all the whining about anyway. We've had tons of millions of immigrants come to this nation throughout its history and they all had to learn English and assimilate into the community. What makes it so difficult now. If its too hard, don't come here.

Because we want people that are intelligent to come to the US. We want people that will make productive citizens, that want to assimilate with their fellow Americans, and show an absolute desire and passion to become an American. Whats so wrong with that? Its not too much to request- Im just sorry that you arent intelligent enough to see it.

the language is partly national pride, but also part of the basis of becoming a citizen--to assimilate to our society. if you are insecure that someone from another country knows more about your country than you, educate yourself! empower yourself! don't take for granted that you were born in the greatest country in the world

It's important to have citizens that can think and reason. We don't need anymore citizens posting questions on Yahoo with poor spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I think we have enough of them already, don't you?
