It was said of Esau that he sought repentance with tears for having lost the blessing of Isaac to Jacob. Perhaps it was this continued guilt that drove him to seek his brother in reconciliation or more likely it was his being rejected of YHVH that he sought to slay his brother and gain the inheritance by nefarious means. ( a method that is still employed to this day by his descendants). Apparently that was the thought that went through Jacob’s mind as he prepared to meet his brother after so long a separation. That YHYH did not allow such an act to take place and foil the birth line of the Messiah is another indication of His power over the lives of men, even when He is rebuffed, rejected or denied. The Scripture still reads “Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” Arabs may not like that verse, but then again that may be why they serve a different god in Allah.

If I were in Esau's place, it would take getting over the anger, and an apology from him at the least. There is also the fact that their father was still alive(at teh time of the blessing), and it may have been extremely upsetting to him for his sons to be fighting. It may even have been his death and their grief that brought them together.
