A "date" is a scheduled time in the future to go out with and do something with another person.
SO, you can go on a "Date" with someone new or someone that you are already in a relationship with.
For example a guy would ask a girl, would you like to go see the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie tomorrow? And she would say yes or no. If she says yes then it's a "Date".

not necessarily in a "Relationship"
but a date is mainly when a guy and a girl go out together somewhere.
