Gift certificates are great but very impersonal.
If you want something more sentimental, try making a scrapbook that starts with the you and his friend ship and slowly move on to him meeting his bride, and their relationship.
It is something he can take with him, and that both him and his bride can enjoy.

Some couples make what's called a GIFT REGISTRY... where they enter items from a store (like Macy's) that they like. Then friends who visit the store can type the bride or groom's name into the computer to see what the couple wants. It's kind of a fancy thing that some couples do. If they don't REGISTER, then a gift of 100 dollars or more from you would be appropriate (if you are in the bridal party or are family) If you are not in the bridal party or family, a gift of 50 dollars is fine. If you do buy a gift, avoid things like Blenders, Coffee Makers, Bedsheets and/or House Stuff unless it's in the registry. If you're not sure that they will like what you buy, then give them money. There are cards called "Money Holders" for Weddings and other celebrations. Find a nice one and put a clean crisp 100 or 50 dollar bill in it or a check. If you don't have that much money and your friend is aware of this, then just give what you can. Hope this helps.

I am sure that your friend would love a well thought out card/letter from you. Write about how much you value his friendship and how you wish him luck on his journey into marriage as well as in the US. For a gift, I think it would be totally appropriate to give him one or more of the following:
1.) Cash. (In US dollars. You can get this from any bank.)
2.) Gift Certificates. Check out these favorite US stores that are all over the place.
www.homedepot.com
www.bedbathandbeyond.com
www.bestbuy.com
3.) A photo album. It's kind of small and light, and the newly married couple can start adding photos of their life together.
4.) Are they going on a honeymoon? Surpise them by calling up the hotel they are staying at and get them breakfast in bed or some fresh flowers in their room.
5.) Give them something that they can't get in the USA.

You can give them a gift card for an American Store they like. If you don't want to do that, then you can always give them money. If that's not an option, and you're still not sure what to get, then ask him! There's nothing wrong with asking the couple what they would like to receive as gifts! Especially in such a tricky situation!
