or is prayer truly the only thing that works ?

I just read a study that said when people know they are prayed for they are less likely to survive major illnesses and injuries. When they don't know that they're being prayed for it makes no difference. So I would have to say, external prayer does not keep the doctor away. My interpretation of the data would say that being a fighter and working to hang on keeps the doctor away. That may or may not involve eating apples. It depends on the person and their availability. I personally don't eat many apples in the summer. They pale in comparison to fall apples. Instead I eat cherries and peaches and blueberries.(They're very high in antioxidants and they make your mouth purple.)

So, there you have it, everything I know about prayer and fruit preferences as it pertains to health.

Ben Franklin coined the phrase "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". This won't keep the doctor away completely, but Apples are a healthly food source.

If you are planning to snack on an apple, be sure to eat the skin. The skin contains up to five times more antioxidants than the flesh does.

Prayer without action would seem like a waste to me.

The proverbial 'apple a day' is more of a guaranty that the doctor will be at bay than prayer is.

Most healthy people do not pray at all - they eat more fruit and veggies, exercise and release stress!

The apple does have some residual medical benifits because it helps to keep you healthy. Prayer by itself will not keep you healthy unless you are willing to make the effort to do the correct things to remain healthy. Prayer is asking for help and giving thanks, it is not a welfare office that passes out the proverbial pie in the sky.

When I was a child and first heard that, it reminded me of the belief that cloves of garlic kept away vampires. I thought you could ward off doctors by carrying an apple with you... Or chucking it at them...

I'm not joking! I really did think that!

I think you should ask Adam and Eve about that...

Throw the apple at the doctor, that keeps him away.

A healthy diet, including fruits & vegetables, goes a long way to keeping you out of the doctor's office.

I think you'll find that a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, and whatnot will keep the doctor away. That, or a sharp stick! =0)
