Buy off the registry. It's courteous to do so. And get the necessities as much as possible. While we loved that our friends got us the ice cream maker and other accessories we registered for, no one got us bowls or glasses and the other stuff that we 'needed'.
Because some people didn't bother with the registry - we ended up with like 4 different decorative bowls - none with receipts. We ended up with 3 different types of champagne glasses. We ended up with pots & pans that we didn't want or need.
The only way I'd go astray of the registry is to get something spectacular from Tiffany's - like a champagne bucket, a beautiful hammered crystal vase, a liquor or wine decanter, or an amazing picture frame. And, always include a gift receipt so they can exchange it for something that they need. : )

Does the couple have a gift registry?
Don't buy towels, people always end up with a ton of those. Since it's summer, a well-stocked picnic basket (with plates, napkins, etc) would be nice. We got one of those for our wedding.
I had a friend who always bought the wedding couple a SaladShooter. It was his trademark!

you could check the registry, if not hallmark and walmart always have great little wedding gifts.Make up a little bag of goodies for the new couple, candles, lil figurine, money is always good or even a gift card
