I am looking to basically understand and maybe read a bit of German. I don't necessarily need to speak it or be fluent. Is there any particular brand of workbook or program that is better than others?
Thanks!!

There used to be a book from Made simple series, German Made Simple, which was excellent to give you the basics with lots of exercises

to make you familiar with the best online resources in "German as a foreign language"; to expand this idea to the practical daily needs of those who are interested in business, touristic or cultural aspects in Germany; and to provide you with external links and useful tips.

Check out http://www.wikibooks.org

They have a pdf book for beginners to learn German. I have it myself, it is alright. Heck, it is free too. You can also read the chapters online, the pdf seems to easier to navigate.
