The ones I know are addicted to video games and movies. You could get him some movie passes to a local theater or a gift card to Target, Kmart, Walmart so that he could buy a video game.

This is an age when young boys emotional lives are teetering on biological and psychological piviot points. My suggestion would be to choose a gift that elicits praise from his peer group, especially, the female counterparts. This is a critical period for the enhancement of self-esteem and confidence in the emerging young man. Simply ask him a few direct questions about his social interactions and what seems to be the most important to him, he just may give you the answer to your question him self. PS, a playboy would only consume all his time, being that boys at this age think of girls and/or sex on an average of every six minutes.

You definitely should do activities that use your whole body. It will help you build up a long-term healthy body. Don't just do crunches at home. Go outside and play sports with your friends. I totally understand the peer pressure, looking cool, showing off your body in summer and stuff like that, but 13 is too young for doing something just to increase the muscle size. If you use your whole body properly and build the foundation when you are young, then you will get a nice healthy body when you get older. (This is just my opinion, but 13 yr. old boy + Abs = kinda gross....)

Video games. Depending on what you want to spend. If he has a video game system (ask his mom) get him a game for it. They are between $15-$50 at department or toy stores. You could get him a gift certificate to a department store so he could get what he wants. Being that it is summer you could take him and a friend for a day at the nearest pool or water park or even get him some cool stuff to use in the pool if he has one.

It all depends on your budget. Most 14 year old boys I know spend a lot of time playing electronic games. Get him one if he hasn't already owns one.
OR ask him what he wants? Although the surprise element is gone. At least you will be giving him something that he really wants and not something that he will throw aside.

if he has a PS2, or Xbox. Get him a game that he can play. Or a gift certificate to Target, or Walmart so that he can get his own game. If he does not have this, just figure out what he likes to do. Gift certificates are great. Heck, you can get him a cheap MP3 player for $30 nowadays. http://www.woot.com

How about a gift card so he can pick out his own thing. Cant go wrong then. You can even take him and a few of his friends out for pizza, then to the store where he can use his card.
