Children learn at different paces, but for the most part I think by 5 or 6 they should know how to tie their shoes. It makes it a lot easier on the teachers in kindergarten if most of the kids are tying their own shoes!

Most children don't achieve the level of dexterity needed to tie their shoes until between the age of 4 & 5. It helps the teachers if they can tie their shoes before entering kindergarten. Sadly these days of slip on shoes and velcro I know eight-year-olds that can't tie shoes.

that is a interesting question that is very personel to me. My son was given the Binet Intelligence test when he was 5 because he had already become a fluent reader, and knew his computation facts in math and could solve story problems. At the age of 8, he spelled better than most 8th graders, was reading on a 6th grade level- by reading I meaning comprehending and enjoying what he read and could multiply and divide even with decimals very quickly- PLUS- He had lots of friends. BUT... HIS SNEEKERS were secured with velcro because he was disinterested in learning how to tie his shoes. His 2nd grade teacher embarrased him by screaming, "Jason, YOu're 6 year old sister can tie her shoes!!" I was irate. Every child reaches developmental milestones, if you could call this that, at different ages. My son is 26. He is very social, musically talented and intellectually gifted, and HE CAN TIE HIS SHOES!!! He ASKED to learn when he was 9- Yes, I could have gently encouraged earlier, but he was most importantly a nice kid, and functioned at or above age appropriate levels in other activities.

between the ages of 3 to 4, unless they show an interest in this at an earlier age. They need to be able to tie there own shoes before they go to preschool (age 4).

depends on if the child is "normal" or have specials needs as my son. i just use the no ties shoe laces and he is ok with that ,
and i have try to teach him but he don't have the hand coordination for tieing his shoes. he is 7 years old so don't judge all the kids the same

My daughter is 4 and we are just starting to teach her how to tie her laces.
I think probably about 5-6 is when they can do it on their own.
