Because what we're talking about here is one book of fiction, based on another book of fiction.
And people take both so very, very seriously!
Honestly if it wasn't so bloody tragic, it would be funny.
And of course the tragedy is that there are still people, in this day and age, that believe the bible is anything other than a book of mythology. To be honest, I have nothing but pity for them...

(now just watch the answers roll in with statements like "I'm the one that will pity YOU when god sends you to hell".. and so on... threats and fear, that's what religion boils down to...)

Brianna,
Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that a book of fiction is ripping apart this cult. But you have to admit, it's kind of ironic.
And funny too!

Yes, it is really hilarious watching televangelists trying to sell their own books claiming to refute the DaVinci Code.

Why would anyone need to refute a work of fiction that is based on a work of fiction?

Those money grubbing charlatans never miss a trick when it comes to screwing gullible people out of their money. Amazing how five hundred anti-DaVinci Code books all hit the shelves within a week of the DaVinci Code being released as a movie.

Where's your proof that the Bible is fiction? Cite your facts and sources please. Where is the hard evidence that Christ was not the Son of God?

Why do people who do not believe spend so much time trying to disprove something which has withstood the test of time? Why are non-believers so threatened by Christianity? I don't see them out in force to disprove Buddhism or Hinduism? And why do they not dare criticize other books of faith such as the Koran? Because Christians are an easy, relatively passive target and they know that they can get away with it, that's why.

I personally don't care about the DaVinci Code. It's a work of fiction. I didn't read it and didn't see the movie. I know the basic premise of the book though and I know that while it claims to be based on facts, it has been proven that the research for the book was very sloppily done.

I think it is hilarious that they are so worried that it might make people think a little bit instead of being mindless zombies that they have to outlaw watching the movie. Whole countries have banned the thing. It's insane. It's a MOVIE, based on a BOOK.

The Bible has been around for awhile, but the older something gets does not mean the more truth it holds. There are egyptian drawings and caveman drawings on the walls of buildings and caves showing sun gods and other such nonsense. Does that make them true because they've been around forever? OF coruse not.

Fiction is Fiction and does not need to be outlawed. That's just the man trying to keep people from thinking for themselves. 1984 at it's best.

That almost made me rethink my first reaction. Almost.

I will still say I pity you a little, but it was never because I think you're going to hell. I'm certainly in no position to make that sort of judgement.

I do find it a little sad that people are so cynical, I guess. I may be deluding myself in my belief in God, but at least it makes me happy. Personally, I don't know how I'd make it through life without SOMETHING to believe in. Something, or someone, that could reaffirm my value at my lowest point, that I could go to for solace in times of pain, that I can give praise to in my times of joy.

Not all religion boils down to threats and fear. In fact, it's not supposed to be about that at all. It's supposed to be about love and compassion, a higher moral calling toward your fellow man. And you don't have to believe in God to see that that should be a good thing.

As for the Da Vinci Code controversy, I do agree that it's been blown way out of proportion, but some people get a little fanatical about things. Take comfort in knowing that there are religious, faithful people who are just as reasonable and intelligent as anyone else, and who know a real work of fiction when they see it. :)

Blessings.

Not being a fellow atheist, I must say the controversy surrounding the DaVinci Code is quite ludicrous - it just goes to show how the power of the media and popular artist can persuade much easier than Truth, as you also have fallen prey too! Well, you didn't expect me not to make some comment, being that I am a True Christian and hold your "other book of mythology" in high esteem :) now did you?

As a lifelong comic-book/sci-fi/fantasy geek I understand where the Christians are coming from. In geekdom we have the constant problem of sequels not respecting or rewriting the original source material that we have come to love.

This is clearly seen in such arguments as "They left Tom Bombadil out of 'Fellowship of the Ring?' Peter Jackson Sucks!"

or

"X3 disgraced forty years of X-Men canon in a single swoop. Aaargh!"

The Christians are just experiencing the same sort of thing with the fantasy novel that they grew up with.

I do have to say, though, that it's silly when geeks do it but it's waaaaaaaay sillier when people who think their fiction is real do it.

I am not an athiest and God doesn't believe in athiests. He says no man is without excuse and that all creation testifies of His existence.

The Da Vinci Code starts out by saying, on page 1 no less (before the story begins), that it is based on truth and facts. And many people believe this nonsense. This is one of the main reasons that it is a problem.

I'm most definitely not an atheist, but this is a fictional book. If you are offended by the concept, you don't have to read it. Stirring up controversy just helps sell the book, really. Controversy is America's favorite word.

You dont have to believe the Bible is literal to believe in God.

Anyone with a scrap of intel knows its a story fabricated by man not God, that doesnt mean there is nothing once we die.

What does not believing get you? It's not called faith because its a sure thing my friend.

It's actually quite possibe the DC is more fact then the Bible when you think about it.

Any Christian that answers your question with vile hatred and attempts to place cruses upon you had better try reading their BIBLE again because they have forgotten what a Christian is.

As far as the BOOK goes I believe the BIBLE to be the Word of GOD, you chose differently.

Why can't we just agree to disagree.
