The worst things that scare me in this world is IV and Dentists. not a good combo. I told that to my dentist, as I need to get a few teeth removed and he will have to cut into the gum for one that had just recently broke apart. He gave me Valium pills to take before coming so I am relaxed and wont freak out. Because I have the valium, do I still need iv?

IV sedation is the greatest. They give you a pill to calm you down, but then when you are at the dentist office, they give you a shot it the arm to knock you out and then use the iv to keep you sedated. I went in to have my teeth removed to get dentures about 6 months ago, had the IV sedation. I got knocked out at 8:45 in the morning and then next thing i know three hours later they are helping me get my jacket on and kicking me out the door. It felt like I was only out for a minute. I don't remember too much from that day which could be a good thing. IV sedation is the greatest and if you can afford to do it, i would recommend it.

IVs are most commonly used for dehydration and antibiotics. The valium will calm you down before the appointment. Try a relaxation exercise beforehand. He may give you local anasthesia for pain.

No, you don't. IV can be used to a lot of things, but it isn't used in a dentist office. It could be, for example, to feed you after a stomach surgery, or give you antibiotics, or even warm you. Trust your doctors,it's the first step to a sucessful treatment.

Valium is to calm you down, not to make you not feel pain.

I have never heard of an IV for dental work unless its MAJOR and/or you have health issues.
