Poles put an 'r.' after the year to stress that it is year (not month or day). r. is abbreviation for 'rok' and it means year. Date 08.07.06r. = 08 day, 07 month and 06 year.
1. Very rarely date 08.07.06 could mean 06-day, 07-month and 2008-year, but if there is 'r.' 08.07.06r., everything is clear.
2. If there's 08.07.2006r. they (we) read every numer as if they were adjective (cardinal numbers). It sounds better if there is 'rok' or 'r.'
I almost always put 'r.'... It's stronger than me
