i am looking for a nice hotel or guest house in york to stay for one night in august. Not too expensive and preferably with a smoking area. Would like to be close to the town centre if possible.

anyone got any reccomendations?

You could try accommodation of the University of York. In summertime, they rent out student accommodation, including breakfast, to visitors. I would recommend Fairfax House, there you can stay for one night only and it´s not expensive compared to other hotels and guesthouses (where you pay easily £80 and up for a twin room). The campus is near the city centre, you can easily walk into town.
Prices:
Per night single room for a visitor - £26.50 per person
Per night twin room for visitors - £52.00

The only disadvantage however would be that you will have a shared bathroom.
Check out the University of York website for more information: http://www.york.ac.uk/campusservices/accom/price.htm

Have fun in York, it´s a lovely town!

I stayed in the Edison Hotel two years ago which was just round the corner from Times Square. Was an ok hotel and quite reasonable. It's in an Art Deco style and i'm not sure about the smoking area if they had one or not. You get a good view out of the window if you're high enough up, onto Times Square.

Ooops - I thought you said New York! Soz! My comment isn't much use to you then is it? Duh, sorry!

Travelodge in the centre of town is about the best value for money. If you want to pay a little bit more try the Holiday inn by the racecourse.

Stay outside of the walls to keep your costs down. Ask the tourist information, they'll find you what you want. They're located at the train station.
