Coal is mined then shipped and distributed to coal yards. If someone requires coal for heating, it is delivered by truck , stoked into the furnace and burned. That is fuel.

coal is a fossil fuel, charcoal is a quicker made fossil fuel made by humans, but less efficient. no, we will probably not go back to the steam age using charcoal to power our cars, in fact this could cause too many trees to be cut down. then instead of lower oil supply, we will have a lower tree supply and we will eventually choke from the trees not creating enough oxygen and removing the carbon dioxide from the air and our new steam cars :P. better keep charcoal in your grill.

Coal to oil goes around 50 dollars a barrel. Sounds nice right. Talk the libs into letting us build some refineries and presto you have it. Of course we should still pursue other means of fuel and we have to stop making corn ethanol. It takes more gasoline to make a gallon of corn ethanol than it does to get a gallon of the stuff. Brazil uses SUGARCANE ethanol which is 10 times more effective.

Most of these answers made me laugh. But seriously...

Coal is converted to Syngas (mixture of CO and H2) by a process called "gasification" or coal gasification, which ultimately reacts the carbon in coal with CO2 and steam to make the Syngas.

Remove the bottom half of the "f".
Add a little curly part to the top of the "u"
Flip the "a" 180 degrees.
Leave the "l" the F&c$ alone.
