Or watching too much C-span?
I don't know why I said that--I don't watch C-span. Just being silly I guess.

I think I tend to act silly as a mechanism to ward off all the negative things that tend to happen around us everyday, I figure everyone could use a smile.

You only listed the two negative reasons.(Three counting C-span)

Some people think you're taking things too seriously and want to lighten up the situation. It's a good way to avoid stressing out over unimportant things.
My last boss had no sense of humor regarding his company. He was hard on everybody at work. I never took his crap seriously. I always had a stupid comeback to diffuse the situation.
He called me into his office once to give me a warning and we discussed stress and how I try to avoid it and ended up getting a promotion to supervisor so he didn't have to hassle the employees.
He eventually lightened up on the employees after they started kidding with him too. If I had cowered and said yes sir or no sir like everybody else it would still be a miserable place to work.
Now everybody is happier at work and actually make less mistakes without all the pressure.
Now I'm a subcontractor and he is one of my best customers.
I still get silly sometimes. Especially on Yahoo answers. Some questions shouldn't be taken serious.

Well, personally I believe (if this is the case) that they probably need to overcompinsate in life for their older than comfortable age . You know what I'm saying, Im talking about their looks deteriorating a bit and maybe their energy levels going a bit, maybe the opposite sex dont pay the same kind of attention. Those things must be very hard to deal with. I've heard some stories that it is a very difficult thing ! Thats just my onion!

I would say that excessive silliness comes from a special view of the world where you can see the world as it is, understand that it doesn't make sense, and yet you are determined to enjoy yourself anyway.

Personally, I don't care for silly... it interferes with cooky time.

I tend to be silly when I notice my cynical nature taking over. And when I do, I find myself laughing like crazy.

Like today, I'm wearing a bracelet made of paper clips. My son made it for me and I wore it around doing errands all day long. I'm 35 and PTA Prez...and look like a poser punk.

I actually kind of like it, though.....

Sometimes neither. Some of us just aren't conformist who forgot what it was like to laugh for no reason, make snow angels or have lemonade on a hot Summer day. Life's too short to take it too seriously.
