I can only feel sorry for the Brits. They have grown up hearing stories of how great was their "Empire" and now Mr.Blair has to hang on to the coattails of Bush to be able to make himself heard.

What would you do?
You & your family are trapped in say Bosnia/Cosovo or whererver with the threat of death & rape hanging over you 24/7... Now do you go to the nearest safe country ? At first maybe yes but what about the UK who'll give you health care & benefit & a place to stay? I see how the issue gets really fuzzy sometimes but ask yourself what you would do in their situation before you assume immigrants are just spongers.... Imagine what some of them must have been through...
Maybe the state of immigration law in the UK is breeding more & more racists every day.... Wanna be angry with someone? Give Mr. Blair a ring!
Said it before & I will again..... I just do not understand racism.... We live on Earth.... We are all human... We all have the same colour blood & we all cry & love.....
I can't ever make this point enough but will get off my soap box for now as I feel a real rant coming on & its nearly the weekend so time to chill!!!

Immigration is too complex a problem to deal with in a forum such as this; however, as long as certain countries and regions have far more than others then people are going to want to go to them. It is only human nature to want something better for yourself, especially when you can see others enjoying what you don't have. I am not sure if the problem is solvable as no matter what checks and balances you put into place, people will be able to break them. The act of allowing skilled immigration to cover for skill shortages in the country only compounds the problem, the developing countries from which the immigrants come are being drained of skilled and motivated workers which then causes an even greater gap in wealth between our nations and therefore an even greater desire for people with so little to come looking where they perceive we have so much. If you have any serious suggestions as to how to reduce the disparity in wealth and opportunity between the west and developing worlds then I would suggest you go into politics.

If they are coming over here to work and do the pants jobs our lazy dole hoggers don't want to do, then fine. They are less of a burden on our system than the idiots who sit around all day drinking cider and smoking fags or having a baby on purpose at 17 so they can get a council house.
Political refugees are obviously a different matter and should be provided protection if going home puts them in serious danger - many of them are very intelligent and learned people who can contribute to society if allowed to work.
As for the ones who come over here and then bring the entire family over to live off benefits - we need to get tougher. It's practically impossible for me to emigrate to NZ, USA or Oz even with a degree, MSc and full work history, yet Britain has always seemed to let in anyone and everyone.

"getting benifits"...Of those I have met here I believe I hate you worst of all! No fan of England here. But Legal American immigration quotas... English speaking, educated Europeans admissions are only 4 % overall that they allow in each year? They come with the language, a trade, and an education and they are discriminated against for 80 plus% over those that will NEVER attain that level of assimilation?
Before you hit me with the math thing, there are Asian and O.T.M.'s that are accounted for correct.

There are problems here in the U.K with immigration and the ease of new entrants even illegal ones to get benefits but this isn't the case with all immigrants.
We all need to realise that some people would be murdered and tortured if sent back, those who are known to be against tyrants for example.
Not everyone wants to exist on benefits but the government wont grant them permission to work which is a shame cos we could always train them and get them to work as N.H.S dentists!!!

People don't come over for the sole reason of getting benefits. Most are seeking assylum from war torn countries and need safety.
Britain accepts a lot less refugees per head than most other developed countries.

Ireland has the exact same problem. When they get off the plane, they should be brought straight to a factory and tied to a machine and made earn their living. I'm sick and tired of working my guts out for crap money just so they swan around in their houses that we pay for, their weekly benefits of 400 euro or more, and cars and insurance paid for. If I took over the country, I'd run them all out,

Don't listen to them mate, they think its trendy to enjoy over a million (and rising) people who have travelled through many other perfectly acceptable countries to get to our "free money" bonanza.
Ok people, I know that your favourite journo's in the Guardian may not agree with me but then again thats no surprise really as I a a mid 30's, mid-working class white male (and as such the new "minority") I'm not allowed an opinion without having the word "racist" screamed at me.
The figures speak for themselves the strain on our healthcare, education and increased violent crime/prostitution not to mention the fact that countries that join the EU with 27pence in their countries bank account do no good for interest rates at all.
Ok I admit that the question could have been more inclusionist but before you all jump down his throat he is as entitled to whatever opinion he may have - oh unless it agrees with yours right?

I'm from the UK and i think anyone who wants to come and live here should first prove they can offer our country something and they are not just coming over for a free ride

Firstly, I am a Brit and I am married to a US citizen we live in the UK. There are many Brits married to US citizens so I think you will find (Ben B) that the majority of Brits do like their US counterparts. Of course there is always a few regardless of what society you live in.
The UK is known as the US 51st state; well it is amongst the people I associate with........I have friends and family who live in the US.......they have fought in wars for you guys........I would hope you guys like us.......you have no real reasons to hate us. If your government says JUMP we do usually to help get your butts out of trouble. :D
