It is a learned response. Humans (and animals) mimic each other as a social connection. It is the way we bond with each other. We do not wish to be different than those around us because we've learned that it makes others uncomfortable and we wish to belong.
Not only with laughter but with other facial expressions too. Generally a scowl receives a scowl, a smile receives a smile - generally.

Because, when people laugh other people want to laugh because unconsciously they don't want to be left out or they don't want to seem like they missed something. And laughter is contagious!!!

I think a kind of tension often develops in a room. One reason why we laugh is to express relief. When a tension is broken, we often respond in kind. It's quite liberating, I think.
