Lie on the edge of the bed, you'll soon drop off....

It may seem stupid, but doctors will tell you that exercise and fresh air are the best ways to get some sleep. The reason comes from your natural chemistry. If you exert yourself beyond your normal capacity (run a mile an hour before you want to go to bed), your body goes into a recovery mode. It needs the sleep to build back what it lost during your exertion.

The opposite is TV and video games. The body does little to burn anything that it can't recover simultaneously, and the brain is able to work without the body present. Add a higher stimulation (gaming), and you actually keep it running without the want for rest.

A warm lavender bath followed by a milky drink. A cool, well ventilated bedroom (no TV), read a little (nothing too stimulating!) and try some relaxation techniques (tensing and relaxing toes, tensing and relaxing toes and feet working up your body). Try to avoid planning the following day's events or sorting the past day's - focus on a holiday you enjoyed or go to your 'safe' place (mine is an empty beach). And if all else fails, get up, have a cup of tea and try again. Don't lie there worrying about what time you have to get up and how awful you'll feel the next day! Good luck!

Our sleep cycle is affected by the light. An hour or two before bedtime, avoid light stimulation such as TV and PC. During sleep, make sure that:

1. Your room is dark
2. The temperature is right (24 degrees celcius)
3. Your bed is comfortable
4. There are not disturbing noise (such as clock tickings..)
5. Your mind is clear

The last point is the least easy to control, but you must make it a habit. Tell yourself to leave the thinking till tmr.

Hope you have a nice dream :)

Drink warm milk. Eat a turkey sandwich. (both loaded with trytophan) I look up and count backwards from 100. Try different languages - Spanish, French, Norwegian. I never get to 50.
Warm bath - not hot - hot bath will increase endorphins and keep you awake.
Three or more hours before bedtime take a good fast walk for 30 or 45 minutes.
Sleep when you can. Don't stress it.

Be very active during the day, and only take as much sleep as you need. Try to resolve arguments before you go to bed. Write a notebook to write down what you are worried about and put it away. You can always look at it in the morning.

Imagine your are playing snooker. It's your turn, sink a red then the black, another red and then another black. do that fifteen times then go for the colours in turn, ( if you havent dropped off by now). Yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and then black. Take a bow as the cameras flash. You have scored a maximum brake! Wish I could visulise it but I'm always asleep long before I've chalked my cue. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Clear your mind. Lie on your back, then starting at your feet. Flex your feet and straighten. do this five or ten times. Then without moving your feet again, move to your calves, flex and relax again 5 - 10 times. Move to your thighs, buttocks, stomach, arms. Dont move the part of your body you have already worked on. This will help you relax and you will probably fall asleep before you have finished.

What works for me is to choose the dream I'm going to dream. This sounds crazy but it works. Close your eyes and decide what you're going to dream about. For example, your own chat show where you "interview" someone, working through the questions and answers. If your mind wanders, bring it back to the interview. Never takes more than about 10 minutes - guaranteed!

I find a nice warm bed after a cup of hot chocolate, maybe with a shot of brandy in it, and a good book will put me out in about 5 minutes

Reading a book always does it for me. Try some lavender in the room too, as it's very relaxing apparently. You used to be able to buy a Radox Lavender pillow spray.
