I start mine with onions , starch water and a family secret a bit of left over coffee for coloring, that is a European sauce. If I do not have the onions I try and have some beef or chicken stock to begin with. Nothing magical about making your own brown sauce , it is easy and cheaper than a package ready made which has chemicals.

Hi
This site has a recipe that should give you and idea
http://www.brownsauce.org/recipes/brown-sauce-recipes/brown-sauce-hp-style/
I do know that the base ingredient of the brown sauce known as 'Daddy's Sauce' in the UK is so strong that when a very small amount was dropped accidentaly at the US manufacturing plant the whole city had to be evacuated
Hope this helps
Steve

A good flavor, kinda like a mixture of soy sauce, barbeque sauce, and sweetner. If you find a place in the u.s. to buy it let me know. We had it in Ireland last year and really enjoyed it.

There is HP fruity which is fruitier and sweeter and ordinary HP sauce- The HP stands for Houses of Parliament- so maybe it's meant to taste of those.
