I thought it was a printing/translation problem
Yikes..... God VS Jacob
and God was KO'd by Jacob?......
I dunno guys... but don't you think this is weird?
I mean how come a mere human such as Jacob defeated God?
I mean it's just... so unbelievable...Jacob the ultimate God contender?
Thank God that's NOT my God.

Then how can you explain this?
Gen 32:30: So Jacob called the place Peniel, [b] saying, "It is because I SAW GOD FACE TO FACE, and yet my life was spared."

25 When the man saw that he COULD NOT OVERPOWER him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak."
But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
27 The man asked him, "What is your name?"
"Jacob," he answered.

28 Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, [a] because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."

29 Jacob said, "Please tell me your name."
But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he blessed him there.

30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, [b] saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."

31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, [c] and he was limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon.
Footnotes:
Genesis 32:28 Israel means he struggles with God .
Genesis 32:30 Peniel means face of God .
Genesis 32:31 Hebrew Penuel , a variant of Peniel

yeah. its the old testament you see. some crazy stuff happened then!!!!!

Where did you get the idea that Jacob did wrestle with God? My Bible the Revised Standard says Jacob wrestled with a man. My King James Bible says Jacob wrestled a man. Is God a man?

Yes it says Jacob did strive with God and man but that is another sentence. One must learn to rightly let the Bible divide itself to gain understanding.

Always start with basic solid truths, then let the Bible word say what they say without a violation of those basic solid foundational facts. This and only this will open the door to understanding.

Have a good day, smile and do keep reading.

No Jacob did not defeat God. But an excellant question! It says that Jacob hung onto God until day break and that God could not shake him loose. Jacob hung onto God until God gave him a blessing and God told him God's Name. Also Jacob said with joy that he had seen God face to face and that God had let him live. This isn't a defeat of God, it is a great accomplishment for Jacob. I'm sorry that I'm so tired now and have to go to bed. There is so much in these passages.

The term seeing God face to face is significant. In that part of the world at that time, to see the face of a King was to be in the kings presence. We are told in the Bible to seek Gods Face. In one place," I seek your face O LORD your face I seek". What that means is that we are to seek the experience of Being in God's Presence. Whenever you see in the Old Testament the word LORD that means that in the Hebrew text is the Hebrew word spelled; yod, he, vav, he. This is the name that was given to Moses at the burning bush and is translated, I AM that I AM.
This name was considered so holy that it was only allowed to be pronounced by the high priest once a year on The Day Of Atonement in the Holy of Holies in the Temple in Jerusalem. The high priest had a long rope tied to his leg in case he died when he pronounced The NAME, and could be dragged out of the Holy of Holies. There is a relationship between God's NAME and being in God's presence. And, when it says that jacob saw God face to face it means that Jacob experienced complete Union with God.
The Bible in one place says that it is imposible to see the Face of God and live. That is why Catholic Contemplatives believe that they may experience partial union with God in this life but that final complete union with God is not possible until after we die. That is all I can write now. I wish my mind wasn't so tired so I could write more clearly and that I had more time to write about this but maybe this will give you some things to think about as you continue to try to understand some of the deeper truthes that are in God's most wonderful Word. God bless you.

The account does not show, or even suggest, that Jacob defeated God or God's angelic representative. The account shows that Jacob persevered, persisted, exerted himself to receive a blessing. He had appreciation for spiritual things. That he in no way defeated God is seen in the fact that all the angel had to do was touch him to put his thigh out of joint.

I think its prudent to note - as I learned in Bruce Feiler's "Where God was Born" - that the tradition of a man wrestling with an angel is a common one in ancient bronze age middle east lore.

It is more important to get what the story is trying to say - that we struggle and strive for a blessing, and that that struggle is a worthy one - than to desperately try to learn the specific historicity behind it.

Sometimes the story is more important than the setting or the people in it. This is one of those times.

In Hos 12:4, this event is spoken of. The man is called an angel there. He is called a man in Genesis. this does not mean he defeated God, but that he "struggled" with God as in prayer. Since no one can defeat God-it can not mean this (defeat). This passage seems strange. But remember, it is our translation and interpretation that is strange.

You write like you have a grip on God right now. Don't let go. I think he would rather wrestle with a spiritual athlete, than drink warm water.

In the original Hebrew text of that verse, the word for G-d is also used to refer to any angel. It is taught that the angel whom he defeated was the guardian angel of his brother Esau. That's why later when he meets his brother he says "I have seen your face ...etc." referring to that battle.
