Well, im going on vacation in 2 days, and i just heard news that my dog will be going through euthanization within a few days of me getting back... talk about a horrible way to ruin a vacation.
anyway, the main thing thats bugging me (besides obviously the eminent loss) is: is it right?
does it fall under "though shall not kill"? or "thou shalt have mercy"?
Thanks

hes dieing of terminal cancer in one of his hind legs, he also has partial liver failure due to this cancer, difficulty breathing cuz the cancer spread to his lungs... we could have saved him by amputating his leg... but all four paws have arthritis, so what's the point?

Is it right to let the pet suffer if it can't be cured and is in huge pain?

i don't know your situation, but a lot of times a dog is euthenized because it is in a lot of pain, perhaps unbearable. I know it seems cruel, but doesn't it seem even more cruel to force them to endure pain when in the end they will die a very painful death? I believe that it is better to end their misery when nothing can be done for them, that way they can die peacefully and not in agony. What is frustrating and wrong is how people will pay to have their dog euthenized just because the dog did something the person didn't like. Such as, the dog chewed on the furniture. Also, how dogs and cats are euthenized in shelters because they are not adopted, yet despite this people continue to breed despite the fact that there are too many dogs already.

I am torn in two over this question:
On the left side, its just not right to just end their life without so much as giving them a fighting chance.
On the right side, I know I would not like to see my kitty, Patches, suffer a horrible long-term death.
I have been thinking about this lately since my best friend Jeff's dog, Nelly, was euthanized for a form of bladder cancer. He cried and cried, but when the day was done, he knew that it was for the best.
NOTE: REFERRING TO THE FOLLOWING RESPONSE (DOWN THE LIST) ABOUT "THOU SHALT NOT KILL" ONLY APPLYING TO PEOPLE. What about someone who is dying of an inoperable brain tumor and they can't do anything but lay in a bed and slowly die over the course of a year. What about euthanizing them?

When an animal is suffering, and there is no hope that you can change the outcome of the illness, I believe the kindest thing to do is to euthanaze it. I had to do exactly that 4 days ago. (That was after a fight of nearly 4 years to give her the best possible chance of living.)
But I also have a rather pressing question to put to you - why do you want to wait till after your holiday? Isn't your dog suffering now already? Shouldn't you have mercy now already?

Why does your dog have to be put to sleep? It is always hard but if a dog is in pain or going to die it is much more humane t to do it this way. When my cocker got liver disease we had to put her to sleep. SHe was 15 months old.
We stayed in the room with her and I held her in my arms. She was relaxed, unafraid and she passed very quickly and painlessly. We all cried, there and the rest of the day. I cried for weeks and to this day I miss her, that was 6 years ago.
So yes, in my opinion it is thou shalt have mercy.. I watched my mom died last august at 64 from a broken heart.. She also had alzheimers, but that did not kill her, my father died 8 months prior to that..
When I saw what she was going through I thought, why can they put dogs to sleep and murderers in prison, but they make my mother suffer!

well if your pet is suffering wouldn't you want to make the pain go away in some kind of way? I know i had to do this about 3 month ago to a rabbit of mine. She had nerve damage and the vet said had to be put down. Yeah you feel bad about it but you have to think of it this way at least all the pain and suffering that they had is now gone plus it's a better then just taking it out back somewhere and having someone shot it to take it out of it's misery.

"Thou shalts" only apply to people.
It is not only OK, it is a responsibility.
My mom was great, but I do give her 1 fault.
We had a dog that was dying an ucomfortable death - digestive problems literally had the dog starving to death. My mom refused to euthenize the pet. Watching it slowly die over a month was the worse thing I went thru as a child.
There was nothing good and everything bad for us or the pet not euthenizing it.

I believe it falls under "Thou shalt have mercy" - I watched one of my horses suffering and had to make the decision to have her put to sleep. It was really hard, but I couldn't stand there and watch her suffering anymore.
I feel the same for human beings! I wouldn't want prolonged pain, as an animal or as a human - would you?

well if it is euthenized for no reason then hell no it's not right but if it is sufferin then it is ok like on animal cops they take animals from abusive situations and try to help them if there is no way then they humanly euthenize them and it's always for the better and in ur case yes it is ok b/c the dog is in pain and it's sufferin and doesn't need to go through that. my grandparents had a dog and it was a really old dog and eventually it got so old it couldn't move from anywhere and it's kidneys started to fail and we had to get it euthenized. and if it's too hard on u then u might want to get another dog to help u recover from ur lose and g/l with everythin.

a dog does not have a soul plain and simple and if the dog is suffering the humane and merciful thing is to have it painlessly put sleep (death) but I feel your pain I have had my German Shepard put to sleep because of her hip displacer while I was on vacation didn't even get to say good bye but she was in so much pain the vet called my cell and I knew it was the best thing.

Euthanization is showing mercy. I have been through this countelss times with my cats. Somehow, you know when they have had enough. They do not understand suffering as we do, so the humane thing to do is to help them through their misery.
I wish it was legal for humans.
