It only makes sense that more people are vegetarian now than in the past. There are more options for food sources now.
Every year in the U.S., more than 27 billion animals are slaughtered for food. Raising animals on factory farms is cruel and ecologically devastating. Eating animals is bad for our health, leading directly to many diseases and illnesses, including heart attacks, strokes, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. In response to animal welfare, health, and ecological concerns, compassionate people everywhere are adopting a vegetarian diet.

Because humans are strange creatures, who have a need to feel guilty about every thing they do. They are afraid they might kill something that has feelings. The only thing is, even while eating a vegetarian diet, you are still exploiting and killing living things that may possibly have feelings. Just because something doesn't move, or make a noise doesn't mean anything. If it's alive it could have feelings of some sort.

If people were meant to be vegetarians they'd have huge pot guts like cows and gorillas. Vegetables take a lot of energy to process in the body and they create a lot of gas.

People in my family live well into their 90's eating lots of meat.

Because animals are fed with hormones and antibiotics which is bad for your organism. Their brains release chemicals that relieve their pain and stress. When you eat this meat, your body feels like being in stress and pain. This causes high blood pressure and tiredness and aggression. There is also a lot of cholesterol which causes heart disease. Another reason is that animals need vast areas of land which could be used for feeding people. In these days, when overpopulation occurs, we must spare farming land as much as possible. Another thing is suffering of those animals. You wouldnt eat your dog i suppose. So why do you eat pigs and cows? They feel the pain to the same extent as you do, not less. They suffer and cry. Dont tell me that people are carnivores- thats not true! I appretiate everything that is natural. It is maybe ok to have pigs or hens at home, where they can run and when you feed them by their natural food and then slaughter them painlessly in a human way. But the things that occur in those large companies are absolutely unnatural! So, if you want to eat meat (despite that your body is not a body of a carnivore) than only that which was produced by normal and natural way.

Because vegetarianism is really just a step in the human evolutionary process. In these modern times it is unnecessary to kill to eat because of modern farming technology. Grow some veggies buddy.

Because it's healthier and better for you and the animals. People these days have come to realise that eating meat is unnecessary and that there are many better alternatives that will help themselves, the environment and won't promote animal cruelty. When you become vegetarian you hurt a lot less people.

I think it depends what country you're from: People from Europe are becoming vegetarians more and more because of diseases in cows. In the United States, I think people are becoming more aware of what's actually going on in slaughter houses. Also, with more people getting internet and finding out about celebrities lives etc, it's becoming more popular; many celebs are vegetarians and peta members (Joaquin Phoenix, Pam Anderson, etc.).

Because people have evolved into realizing that there is a more compassionate way to nourish our bodies.

Also, we do not need to eat meat as much as we may have needed to before. In a time and place where you had to have meat to survive, then obviously, eating meat was necessary. But nowadays, most people live in a place where meat is NOT necessary for their survival and they refrain. It is healthier to not eat meat. People who live the longest eat very little or no meat and they have less health problems and a higher quality of life.

It is the simple realization that all non-vegitarian food causes lot of health problems. All meat items are proved to create too many health problems like high colostrol, high blood pressure, obiesity, etc. Doctors all over the globe recommend fibre based foods, which are vegitables! vegitables are easy to digest, give you more positive energy. Humans are basically vegitarians. observe our teeth structure of humans which are not sharp like carniovores. our intestine is not designed to digest meat or any similar non-veg items. Stress control is more effective with vegitarian diet.
