If your doctor has recommended "bypass" then it's because your cardiac work-up indicates you probably have either multi-vessel disease or severe single vessel disease that PTCA or stenting will not resolve. In order to maintain the patency of grafts after bypass, you need to change the life style habits and adjust the genetic lot you were dealt with as much as possible ie: low cholesterol diet, no smoking, controlling diabetes(if you have that), weight control, stress reduction, cholesterol lowering meds, "statin" meds, vitamins B6 and Folate, aspirin(low dose). If you are successful, you can probably look at 10-20 years of being heart healthy. The other thing to remember is as we age our bodies naturally "grow" extra vessels to supply blood to areas where previous blood vessels have become blocked; so often times it is never necessary to do bypass re-dos.

Bypass surgery is needed for active life. If quality of life can be changed physical exercise medication and rest are very good.Bypass does not cure the underlying causes like diabetes and high B.P.
Coronary insufficiency recurs within 5 yrs if underlying diseases are not effectively controlled
With good control 10 yr healthy life is normal after CABG.

it depends on what amount of blockage is present in the coronary arteries and how many arteries are involved.
the other option available is angioplasty, which is usually done in single vessel disease.
but if all the three vessels are involved, then docs generally go with the bypass(CABG)
well, it depends how long the surgery keeps the patient better,if u avoid all inciting factors such as smoking, alcohol, hypercholesteremia. u can expect upto 15-20 years without any changes in these bypasses.

Bypass surgery is not a "cure" for heart disease...it is a method of correcting the damage that heart disease has caused. In order to stay healthy and prevent recurrence of cardiovascular damage, you have to make lifestyle and dietary changes and stick with them for life...

I don't know why you wouldn't ask your dr this ? yes, there are stents that can be implanted to hold open the arteries...but you may not be a candidate
