You don't. Up to 70% of people who have genital herpes got it from someone who wasn't showing any signs or symptoms (like sores). That's how I got it!

The obvious way to know is if the person has big sores on and around the genital area. These sores can open and puss a clearish liquid. You can still get herpes if the person doesn't have any sores though. The person can be "shedding" the virus, which can result in you getting the virus.

Also, if they have cold sores (herpes simplex virus 1) you can get it from them by kissing them, or even sharing chap stick or lipstick with the person. Even sharing straws (like in a soda) can cause you to get the virus.

Unfortunately, unless they're currently having an outbreak and you know how to recognize the sores, the only way to know is if they tell you. If they offer the info you can be sure. No guarantees if you ask and they say no that they're telling you the truth, but don't let that stop you from asking - because even if they're NOT having an outbreak you can still get it through any kind of sexual contact, and here's the crappy part - you can never get rid of it. That's huge. The moral of the story - ask the question. Use your judgment on whether or not to trust a "no" answer.

You don't, Some people on here said "only if they tell you", problem is that around 25% of people are infected with genital herpes. Most of them are not even aware that they have it because their symptoms are so mild. If you are worried, its is always good to sit down, and talk with a potential partner. Remember that the sporadic discomfort of herpes is usually less worrisome to people who have it than the stigma that comes along with it! Hope that helps!

there is no real way of know if anybody has anything. think about even if you ask they would more than likely lie about because of the fear of everyone knowing the best thing to do is not to have sex at all. be if you think you just got to get some. than you both should go get tested together and than still have save sex
