My wife is in the US Air Force and we are getting stationed in Mildenhall, Suffolk. We plan on living in England after she gets out of the AF. We are both open minded people and neither of us think we're better than anyone because we're American. We also both disagree with most of America's international policies and especially most of Bush's policies. Can we live in England in peace?

For anyone who wonders why I would think I can't live in England in peace, just look at some of the answers that people have given me to some of my questions. I started feeling this way because a lot of people where very hostile to me with my first question showing my interest in joining the British military if I'm an American citizen. I never realized before that question, that there where hostilities towards Americans. Its not my fault my government is crappy. Oh, and by the way, I do throw great parties.

Who really knows? Do you throw good parties? I would advise you not to paint your house as the stars and stripes though.

I live in England with my husband who's in the US Army. We're stationed at Molesworth/Alconbury, not far from Mildenhall (about an hour by car). We live here quite peacefully, thank you. We live on the economy in private housing, and my son goes to the local primary school and my daughter goes to the nursery. We have neighbors who are French, Dutch, and German, as well as English. We haven't had any trouble.
Nobody's even asked us about Bush's policies, although my position would be the same as yours if they did. Remember that they've got troops in Iraq as well, and many of them are no more fond of Blair than we are of Bush.
English people are very, very polite and don't ask a lot of forward questions like Americans do--so the thought of someone harrassing you is quite out of the question. I can't imagine why you would even worry.

Why wouldn't you be able to live in England in peace?? What do you think we'll do to you?? I can't quite understand why you even THINK you might be harassed!! All you need to live in England is a sense of humour. The only problem the Brits have with Septic Tanks is their general unwillingness to grasp that there is a WHOLE WORLD out there - but maybe that's because the US is so vast. By wanting to live in the UK you've already proved you have a PASSPORT. P.S. can you get me some Smuckers grape jelly please?

should be ok. i'm from east london and essex and have noticed no probs towards americans. you may, however, be assumed to be tourists all the time and ripped off with the price of tea and muffins! i suggest a badge saying "no i'm not a f***ing tourist" on it, and you will fit right in! in my experience of the south east/midlands/norfolk if you can stand being called a yank now and again you will be fine. and there is a lot of swearing anywhere near alcohol or football pitches. and yes, that weird to you word, "bollocks" is swearing. it makes my O.T.A. friends laugh a lot.
and we have a poor imitation of the wingsnbeer hooters.
seeing as how mildenhall has been around awhile and we haven't been at war with the usa for a while i think you will be one of us sooner than you think. stain your teeth brown and answer questions with "uuuh yeh/nah....aint it" and no one will notice you are states. lol. best wishes fo shizzle.
contact me through answers if need. np.

Yep, course you can. Suffolk has a number of US bases so Americans are well known there.
But do get out and about whilst your wife is stationed there and see something of the rest of the country. There are many fine places around the country to ettle down in.

You will be very welcome in England, however you should look around a little before deciding on the south.Yorkshire is much cheaper, and has some of the beautifulest areas in the UK.
You certainly can live in peace,we are a funny old crowd but the powers to be rarely let anything through the net.

You can live in England in peace whatever you views on politics. Us English tend to judge you on you 'as a person' rather than you 'as a stereotypical American'. Be friendly, and most people will be friendly back - but remember the rules - don't talk about politics, money, or religion!

You'll be more than welcome, buddy! I live in Suffolk too and there are plenty of decent Americans. You will certainly be accepted if and when you come over, especially if you're not stereotypical! You'll not get harassed any different to anyone else, lol. Suffolk's a fairly quiet and friendly place!
Good luck with the move.
:)
Knitmama's hit the nail on the head! ;)
(yes, we generally loathe blair too, lol)

try having elocution lessons to disguise your accent, avoid wearing track suits, learn some jolly useful english phrases ie: lovely weather today, jolly good show, right ho old bean, rather.
buy some chorderoy trousers and tweed jackets, always read horse and hound/ contry living. it may sound like a lot of bother but it is probably th best way ! might be fun pretending to be secret agents !
