I tell people who think they should never pay for a cat since there are always "free kitten" ads, that adopting from a shelter is a much better deal. By the time you pay for shots, worming, flea treatment, getting it spayed/ neutered, any other vet care it needs, you will have spent probably twice as much for the "free" kitten as it would cost to adopt from a shelter. (and if they're not going to do that stuff they shouldn't get a kitten anyway) I agree that taking free kittens can be similar to buying from backyard breeders in that it's encouraging irresponsible breeding even if it's not directly financially rewarding it. Even if they don't make a profit, taking the kittens does encourage people who think there's no reason to get their pets spayed because "we always find homes for them" -- never mind that they often don't screen the buyers/ takers well (or at all!) to make sure it's a good home, they often hand out the babies too young so they won't have to bother with them or pay to feed them, and separating too early can contribute to behaviour problems that might end up with them being abandoned And they almost always give away kittens unaltered and those kittens go on to breed more and more and more moggies. However, it's true that sometimes when people are trying to find homes for kittens it's not due to their having let their cat breed, since there are people who have taken in a pregnant stray cat or mother cat & a litter, or abandoned or orphaned kittens, and then find homes for the kittens. The most responsible thing to do when finding homes for kittens is to have the kittens altered before you let them go to new homes. Many places now have low cost spay/neuter and even if it's not in one's own town there may be a place within driving distance. Then one can just charge an adoption fee to pay for the vet costs, and give copies of the vet records to the people getting the kittens. Any responsible person should not mind paying to reimburse someone for vet expenses since it's for things they should be going to get anyway. I see nothing wrong with someone getting a puppy or kitten from a reputable breeder, the ones who are trying to preserve the breeds and keep them healthy. & I agree with most of what Café wrote about the source of cats in shelters and the differences between types of breeders. BTW, 8 kittens in a litter is quite possible. It's not very common but I've heard of it in both pedigreed cats and moggies.

Becareful how you treat a kitten. Any trama they are exposed to can create behavoir problems in the future. Be gentle and they will always trust you, be rough and it might back fire in a bad way. She may not become mean but she might do other things like poop in your clean clothes or... pee on the floor.
My suggestion is just be gentle for the first few months... Play with socks, strings, balls, etc... NOT YOUR HANDS

Kittens learn by playing They should be played with but on their own terms. Throw things he can chase at his own speed. Play with a string that he can catch with his own dexterity. Can you imagine a mother cat twirling her kittens around on the floor? Why? What does it teach them. Playing with toys teaches a kitten how to hunt and strengthens its muscles. Twirling just makes them dizzy. And probably nauseous. Twirling is treating a kitten like a toy. Twirling probably amuses you much more than that poor kitten.

Spend some money on kitten toys. Contact with a kitten should be gentle and comforting. Could you honestly say you would enjoy be "twillering" around in circles on your back on the floor? Stop it is RIGHT.

i don't know about "mean" but they will probably develop a fear of humans and be more likely to try to scratch/bite to defend themselves in the future. At a young age, kittens need to be able to trust their owners, not fear them. So the answer is Yes, hurtling the poor defenseless animals around the floor is generally not a good idea!!

One of my cats is nastier than the other and when she was a kitten I was dating a guy that liked to play rough with her so maybe that explains her moodiness 5 years later. The other cat is super friendly and was not exposed to that man.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like that done to you so I wouldn't do it to an animal for that reason. If you do it and the kitten tries to get away, that's a pretty good sign that he doesn't like it so don't do it again.

Yes you could make them antisocial by twirling them around. Cats have a dominance thing. So when you show YOUR dominance by twirling them, the cat has to be mean to someone or something to make up for it.

Only if you do it as a mean thing. My cats loved being played with this way. I wasn't harsh or phyical doing it, we did it in a fun way.

I know I would become mean if that was done to me... but kitties.. I doubt it. You should not do anything to make them mean anyway.... Perhaps one way would be to scratch their tummy a little harshly.. My kitty does not like that so I do not do it anymore.
