I'm being transfered to the ny area next spring. I plan on staying for good. I was told to look for rentals, but id like to buy. Do 500-600k apartments exist in the area (hopefully in a hip or at least nice/safe area)? Im single, looking for a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, not-studio.

ive lived in bogota, santo domingo, and san juan so a "safe" place means i can walk around without worrying about being kidnapped/shot at. thanks.

good luck...prices may be coming down/evening out - a friend of mine actually just had a one bedroom for sale for $600 on the upper east side. It's tough, but maybe doable - just not a whole lot available. It won't be the newest either and be prepared to show recs to co-op boards and pay a monthly maintenance fee in addition to your mortgage.

Almost anything in Manhattan will be safe, and yes, you can get a one-bedroom in Manhattan for $500-600k. If you have time to shop around, you may be able to score a deal 1+ or 2 bedroom around the 100's. The only thing to watch out for are the common charges. The Upper West Side usually has decent common charges $300 - $700/mo, but some charges can be well over $1000/mo. Battery Park City is notorious for this as well as a lot of Upper East Side apartments.

A one-bedroom in that price range is definitely realistic.

Good luck.

Yes...they won't be very big. I have what is called a JR Two Bedroom it's worth around 450 -- 500K. The bedrooms are 9' by 12' . Galley kitchen/living room about 12' by 12'. Good neighborhood though East 30's.

There are a ton of New York real estate & general websites that have listings in the 600k range - it just may take some leg work on your part.

Citihabitats.com, allcityny.com, ardorny.com, mlx.com, urbanhabitat.net, realestate.newyorktimes.com - to name a few!

Good luck - I want to move there this yr. as well but I definitely cannot afford to buy at this point, YET!

Try the Queens West and Shaefer's Landing developments.

They'll be hip (probably) in a few years.

I believe Elliman has them.
