Yesterday after church, my neighbor was showing me his new powerboat. I thought to myself, "Wow, ghees, I wish I had that boat." And I've been thinking about it since and wanting to get a boat like his.
I study the Bible and I know that to covet is a sin. Now I am wondering if I am guilty. Should I give up my dream of getting a boat?

No. You can take comfort in knowing that coveting only happens when you think you deserve the boat more than he does or that he does not deserve a boat in the first place and that you deserve that one. Since you did not think that way and since you only wished a boat like that for yourself; you did not sin my friend. Just keep your heart open; wish him and his boat well; think that he deserved a boat and shall keep his without any accidents or mishaps and continue thinking that you deserve a boat (no comparison with others). May God help you have one and I believe you will have one in the right time:)have a nice day

To want the boat in itself is not a sin, but to be more like your friend instead of your true good self could lead you to trouble. Getting yourself a boat will not make you a better person, just one with more debt. Why not just enjoy your neighbor's boat with him and save yourself the money and headache. The new boat will not bring you any more true friends, probably only false ones. And the happiest day you have with a boat is the day you get rid of it.

No that's not technically covetting. To covet is to want something FROM that person (like to steal it or something) Wanting a boat of your own is a goal...not a sin. ^__^
Don't give up your dreams of getting a boat, it's great motivation to succeed.

It's a sin if you covet (want) HIS boat. (Exodus 20:17) But wanting A boat in general is not a sin. Just don't envy him for having a boat when you don't.

it is not a sin for wanting the boat. it is right. but it will be a sin only if u steal it from ur neighbor or damage it because u did not get it. if u want it, try to get one by ur money. it is not sin to desire as long as u do not harm others intentionally. why the bible says that desire is a sin is that because of desire, we may try to attain what we desire thru wrong means also. if u know that u r right and u are not doing anything wrong intentionally, then there is no sin. dont worry.

No. The sin probably is to covet your neighbor's boat and offing him to get it. Lots of boats out there for sale. Just ask your neighbor where he got it, is he happy with it, etc.

You want to get your own boat honestly. That is not a sin.
It would have been a sin if you wanted to steal your neighbors boat.

I don't think so. You generally want a boat. It's not consuming you and your thoughts. You're not willing to send your neighbor to the front lines in order to get it. You ARE willing to save up your money and buy one like it at the boat store... maybe.

As far as I am concerned, there are no sins. Sin is a name given to a persuassion method in order to impose some rules for living in a community. Ancient people called them commandments (or so...). These rules are done to help you integrate in a community which has as scope harmony between its members. Non-integration-willing members had to be scared with something non-violent, yet strong, like "sin" (which would bring heavy punishment in other dimensions - like "hell").
Terrorist communities, for eg., have the scope to break harmony (generic known as peace), therefore they act by the opposite set of rules. In their community, to show mercy is a break of rule (you can call it sin).

If you are truly a Christian than yes your must sacrifice all that makes you human, even your life.
A Christian is nothing more than a dead human.
What does a dead human need with a boat any way?
